I love the way Vista topples over when I change my memory to dual channel. Yet XP doesn't seem to mind. I'm thinking it could be the memory, but they are a matched pair, ideal for dual channel.

I have used Vista for a while now, it hogs so much memory (I have 2GB) and I was happy when I disabled that UAC as it was pissing me off to no end.

Then there is the icons on the desktop with large spaces in-between. What's the deal with that? XP is much easier to use than Vista

About the icons. Just right click, view, and click align to grid (which starts out selected) and it's done. I was bothered by this for away, but I use ObjectDock any way.

@Orwell: I'm glad you finally got Vista to run for you. :)

I personally could live without Aero. The transparent borders aren't helpful to me and I find the Flip function to be just a fancy-schmancy duplicate of the taskbar. I like the interface and the way the start menu is organized, and I love the security features, especially the User Account Control (UAC).

However, I can see that for someone who is more tech-savvy than I, the UAC would be a pain in the rear.

@TallyMan: Disable the UAC -- that will save you a lot of annoyance.

The flip function? Is that the one where it shows all your windows in a 3-d display? That one is kind of silly. Aero can be disabled quite easily to go back to "Windows Classic" but I personally like the XP theme- to me it struck a good balance between eye candy and simplicity. I'm still lukewarm on Vista security, but hey, it's workable as long as you don't do something stupid.

Keith: I'm running matched dual-channel memory; I've got 4GB of which Vista sees 3... gr. The next release of OSX is capable of supporting up to 16 TERABYTES of RAM. Yes, TERA. Windows should be able to see a humble 4GB. But Vista for me does not seem to have any significant issue with dual-channel.

I'm still working on trying to cut down Vista even further, but for now I am stuck using OSX primarily- I need to avoid read/write to my Ubuntu partition until I've carefully read the man pages for some data recovery tools I need to try... woot for user error.

Yes, "flip" is the official term for it. I like how the interface looks -- I wouldn't go back to Windows Classic.

I wouldn't use Vista's security on it's own -- I have McAfee Total Protection. Between that and the UAC, I haven't had any problems. The UAC's warned me a couple of times when something was trying to access my computer, and simply by clicking "Don't allow" I was able to ward off the attack. :D I love how the UAC requires a physical click: a program can't "click" the button -- yet. I'm sure the hackers will find a way around that one someday.

I can see why TallyMan would be annoyed by the search function, but as I know exactly where everything is on my computer, I haven't had to use it yet.

Hate to burst your bubble, but programs can move the mouse around. What is trickier is knowing where to click. And when.

Gamers have long used software called mouse macro applications to control game characters automatically. But they have to do is program the motions and mouse clicks ahead of time. The mouse macros nicely abort control if you touch your mouse, but it need not be so.

Your day goes quicker than most of my customers...

Lemme tell you how bad Vista is hated. I was futzing around at work, and decided to make one of the laptops look like it had XP when it was Vista. Well, this thing hasn't sold in MONTHS, but whatever. Cust comes in, plays with it, complains to me it's horrid slow and should get more ram. I point out it has 2 gbs already. He then came back with, "Damn... it's cause it's sitting next to the Vista machine." Then he left.

You cain't even fool people into buying that OS!

haha that's so sweet. i think it's a very interesting sociological happening that a company with as much money, industry clout, and product knowledge can produce such a piece of crap. it says something about something.... i'm not sure what it is... but there's some kind of lesson in there somewhere.

Vista is a fine OS, it works, it plays my games great, it doesn't annoy me, and I can enable the Windows Classic theme. That's all I care about. I also beta tested for Vista since Beta 1 so they gave me a free copy at the end of it.

I have changed the size of the icons ages ago (about a few minutes after installation) but the spacing is still massive. Who needs large icons anyway?

It's possible you are using 32bit version of Vista. Dual channel works much better when memory intense applications are used. And the difference IS noticeable. I tried single then double, but that was on an NF2 board.
16TB ? If I get enough hard drives I can create a huge array of around 27-30TB :D In the future Microsoft will find a way to fill all but a few TB spare for crap

2 GB's of RAM, and it's still slow? That's f*****g insanity. I have a Mac with 128 MB of RAM, boots right up like a charm, and is incredibly responsive.

Someone needs to take a gun to the head of whoever managed the Vista project.

Keith - You're avatar REALLY pisses me off.

If two gigs of ram are making Vista slow it's not the ram. I ran Vista for months on a system with 768MBs of ram and it ran absolutely fine. And if you get Vista x64 that can use up to 16TBs of ram too, it's just most Windows users are stuck on the 32 bit platform. Also is your 128MB Mac booting Leopard? I've a Powermac G4 with 512MB of ram and Leopard isn't all that responsive on it, although it does work.

I HATE VISTA

I've finally given up working for the day before I put my fist through the monitor. Vista gives me so much grief at times. Today's annoyance:

I have two little wav files I want to join. Simple eh? In Vista the little wav recorder / editor program is gone. Instead there is the all singing and dancing movie maker program. It let me join the files together great. Damn! It won't let me save the joined file as a wav file only a wma file. Visual Studio 2008 doesn't understand wma files only wav files.

When are Microsoft going to bring some sort of compatibility in cross functionality across their products?

Waste of time.

Looks like I've got to use my old XP computer with the little sound recorder program to do the job or download some shareware to the Vista computer for this one simple little task.

Vista stinks.
