ok, I know absolutely nothing about computers and stuff, but we had to make a movie for school and our file is m4v but teachers are being stupid and want it mpeg2 or mpeg4. So my question is: can I convert my m4v files to mpeg2/4 files and would the quality still be good?

Thank You.

Would you be able to open it if the old PC had the latest version of Quicktime? Quicktime is a mac product but is comptabile with P.C.s

As for your original question, i tried to help but i've only been learning about video for a few months now. Sorry.

Alex would probably know the answer, seeing how he is in a film program at george mason university.

You might try VLC, IMO its not the most reliable but it is the easiest program I've ever used for transcoding (admitidly I haven't used many). Just make sure you've tested the new version before you hand it in.

what happens if you rename the file from m4v to mp4? will it play? try it out and report back. make a copy if you are concerned about messing it up.

m4v is an apple format, correct? is your video for a ipod screen or something? m4v will probably play in vlc www.videolan.org/vlc or www.smplayer.sourceforge.net/

incorrect. It is iTunes/iPod only.

And yes there are programs you can use to convert .m4v to .wmv, but they cost like $35

M4V files are iTunes Video Files. The M4V file format is based on the MPEG-4 AVC video compression, which is a global media standard with the aim to provide optimized video podcasts for the iPod.

M4V files are opened with iTunes player by default. The copyright of M4V files may be protected by using Apple's FairPlay DRM copyright protection. To play a protected M4V file, the computer needs to be authorized (using iTunes) with the account that was used to purchase the video. However, unprotected M4V files may be recognized and played by other video players by changing the file extension from ‘.m4v’ to ‘.mp4’.

Remove DRM protection from M4V files via Pavtube video converter which enables you to edit and convert videos among almost all video and audio formats.

mplayer or ffmpeg are the best workhorse video convertors, but you need to get dirty with the command line. They can correct and re-index to ensure that the output is playable.

If you're on OSX or Windows, download MPEG Streamclip
http://www.squared5.com/

Open file, then:
File > Export MP4

from the website:
Quote:
MPEG Streamclip is a powerful high-quality video converter, player, editor for MPEG, QuickTime, transport streams, iPod. And now it is a DivX editor and encoding machine, and even a movie downloader.

You can use MPEG Streamclip to: open and play most movie formats including MPEG files or transport streams; edit them with Cut, Copy, Paste, and Trim; set In/Out points and convert them into muxed or demuxed files, or export them to QuickTime, AVI, DV and MPEG-4 files with more than professional quality, so you can easily import them in a DVD authoring tool, and use them with many other applications or devices.
Supported input formats: MPEG, VOB, PS, M2P, MOD,VRO, DAT, MOV, DV, AVI, MP4, TS, M2T, MMV, REC, VID, AUD, AVR, VDR, PVR, TP0, M2V, M1V, MPV, AIFF, M1A, MP2, MPA, AC3, ...

free.

Convert-tune converts various video files well.
It runs on Windows 2003, XP, 7, Vista and adds ID3 tags

Try NCH Software's Prism. It converts almost ANY video format type to the most common formats.
It is a 30 day fully-loaded trial. BUT there is a bug in the software... if you uninstall the program through Add/Remove Programs, then install it from the original download file again, the trial is reset and you get another 30 days.

Is that bug still available? I downloaded the program and (hopefully) I'll find out. By-the-way, is it illegal to take advantage of that bug?
