Which orientation do you put your CD-ROM?

I prefer to go secondary slave - only because it's what I've always done.

Usually I set it up as a secondary master, I think Ron (my partner and my sons' father runs a computer service/sales shop) sets them up as secondary master or slave if I recall right.

Only second.

And the reason some people do it on second master is because it can be quite funky to boot from the cd-rom. Bit of a novelty as far as im concerned but there are some funky things you can do with that kind of setup

I put all my CD-type devices on the secondary IDE channel, to keep them from dragging down the hard drive speed. Usually I put my burner as secondary master and any other CD or DVD drive as secondary slave.

when I do build systems/install optical drives, i generally attach the optical drive to primary slave, though i would use either secondary channel if the primary slave was already occupied

Whatever suits cabling requirements best.

I use higher end SMP motherboards, and the connectors for drives etc. are placed in positions better optimized for rackmount. On my last rig the secondary IDE cable was right below a PCI-X slot - with a really long SCSI card in, so getting it through was a bit of a problem. On my current one (ASUS K8N-DL) the secondary IDE is mounted horizontally.

In both the situations above it is not pratical to put the CD drive off the primary IDE cable. Of course there is the IDE speed hits if you have two devices on the same cable trying to talk but that isn't really an issue IMHO.

I wish optical drives would move to SATA cabling faster though.

Secondary master. On the homebuilt, it's secondary master with regular hard drives on both primaries and the secondary slave. On the old Dell, I have a CD-ROM/DVD-ROM on secondary master, and CD-R/RW on secondary slave.

I follow a grouping order - trying to get one type of drive onto one cable. This means that most often the CD is on secondary master.
