Switching? I've been on the beta/alpha versions for a while now. Only squares wait for the stable release. 15%  15%  [ 4 ]

Ubuntu 9.04 is being released in less than a month. With it, we get improved boot speed, support for the ext4 filesystem (which I am definitely trying out), new versions of GNOME and xorg, a new kernel, presumably newer versions of OOo, and cooler notification icons (with configurable preferences!)

Of course, we're also already looking forward to the fall release of Karmic Koala. Is it wrong to be anticipating two versions ahead? It's almost inevitable when there's a six-month release cycle, but almost as soon as the Intrepid Ibex was working on my laptop I started eagerly awaiting the Jaunty Jackalope.

I've been on 9.04 alpha for a few months with my laptop. Definitely nicer than 8.10 So yeah. I am starting to wonder about Karmic too.

I'm perennially dreaming three distros ahead.

I'll stick to debian, pretty much indestructible, more supported packages and a rolling release.

Will it have more drivers by default? The reason I abandoned versions 7 and 8 was due to lack of drivers or general hardware compatibility problems; e.g my laptop monitor going into dim power-saving mode during the bootup of Ubuntu despite being on mains power. I could never find a way to convince it to brighten up the display (F7 etc, nothing worked). Strangely the only workaround was to put it into hibernation then wake it up again - then the display lit up properly. The last straw was an update wrecking the internet connection so I scratched the Ubuntu partition.

I would assume so. That is customary for any operating system. I now exclusively use the alternate installs as they are more about features and less about GUI, which can be pulled from repository on install. I've found things detect better with each version. My friend used a dvd version, though I did not notice one last time I looked.

Here one is for 9.04 http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/dvd/current/ Its currently in beta.

A big problem with laptops is the funny way things are done. They are not so rigid about specification from what I can tell. I know on mine its 50/50 if it will find the graphics card and install the proprietary driver. But thats a cop out to blame the hardware. Sorry.

How do you handle getting the distro with your internet connection anyway? Public library?

Or I guess you could order one. Canonical is based out of the isle of man I understand.

With only having dial-up internet here in the middle of a field in France I usually order the latest major Ubuntu release through Canonical and they mail me the free CD. I'll get my order in for version 9 and see if it fares any better. I really want Ubuntu to succeed but have limited time to spend on forums trying to find the solution to various compatibility and hardware problems. At least I got the internet connection working on my latest (Advent) laptop with version 8 until the update wrecked it. On my old HP laptop with version 7 I could not get any internet connection full stop.

I'll try it on my desktop, but I just got my laptop working with Ibex.

The DVD contains the whole main repository so it does have more drivers. If its possible to make your hardware work, this is the way to go. Its also friendlier to dialup users because of that. Since the variants of ubuntu all use the same main repository, again, its the way to go.

When's the actual release date? Like, yeah, April, but when in April? I'm setting up a Linux server at home. Trying to debate either going with Ubuntu 9.04, Ubuntu 8.04LTS or Arch......

Crap. I'm getting married that day! *wonders if canonical will change their release schedule*

Kidding. Seriously though, I may just hold out for the next few weeks and kick over to 9.04 once it's out. Betas and me don't get along... And my 8.04 has bugs like you've never known.

I don't think most people take Ubuntu all that seriously as a server platform- its intent was to bring Linux to the desktop user. Plus, it's forked from Debian Sid, so I wouldn't consider it stable enough for a server. Same with Arch, it's too bleeding-edge. Debian Lenny or something like that might be better if you need a server.
