Oh for a second I thought you were a mac user. But you are laughing at the fact that they have less security.

Mac less pretty too. Regardless of what they say.

Rather have this osx....

Hey, Davidred, do you know where you got that desktop wallpaper from on the Ubuntu screenshot? 'Cause I recall having the wallpaper but I forgot which site it was from(the site had loads of really good wallpapers).
Also, is that the Kiba dock?

Ooh! pretty!

I'm still running 8.04, and probably won't upgrade until the next LTS. Perhaps I'll change sooner if it becomes a bit too bloated for my liking, but I don't see the point while it's still the longest supported release.

But I'm definitely looking forward to such a pretty GUI. Then I can rub it in the face of my friends who are going on about windows 7 (The same fools who say Vista is good)

The Default GUI hasnt changed that much.

I have never encountered a person that pays for ubuntu support. How is it?

I think he's referring to the free security updates that come with every Ubuntu release. The LTS versions get them longer, so you can go for quite a while without bothering to upgrade.

The prettiness in the Ubuntu GUI is something you have to set up yourself. Install compiz-config setting manager and the emerald theme manager, and maybe something like cairo-dock or AWN if that's your type of thing, and play around until you have a desktop to make any Mac or Windows user drool.

Oh ok. Then that makes little sense. Ubuntu 9.04 is going to have all the security updates that 8.10 and 8.04 had. LTS without paid support makes little sense to desktop users(or I am missing something)

The security updates for 8.04 keep rolling out until April 2011, whereas they will stop in April and October 2010 respectively for 8.10 and 9.04. They've also already pushed out 8.04.1 and 8.04.2, which are maintenance upgrades (I suppose analogous to Windows service packs?) so the LTS version should theoretically be somewhat more mature and stable. Also, you can keep something that has all the important security patches without having to risk breaking something with an upgrade. Not everyone likes to live on the edge with alpha 1.

I meant the free updates, not the paid support. The Ubuntu community more than meets my needs for anything I want to know.

I haven't swapped because

a) its too much bother to backup and reinstall. I dual-boot with windows xp (will probably end this practice in a few years when it becomes obsolete), so I'll probably back up stuff from that as well, and then just reinstall everything from scratch to keep things simple.

b) 8.04 receives updates longer than any other current release. 'nuf said.

Yeah, b) is the one that doesnt quite make sense in terms of a desktop user. The next upgrade features the same security, and it too has updates. If flaws are found, both versions are patched. Since its not an issue of licence, maximizing your time on a version makes little sense...until you consider a). Which is a very valid reason.

The reason that they have LTS versions is for companies with a lot of computers that cannot have downtime. Servers for example. You want to install those, set updates to automatic, and forget them for a few years.

I am going to investigate several options that would make upgrades less troublesome. DentArthurDent raised the question in my mind, and you have reinforced it.

The reason behind b) on a desktop is basically procrastination: because it has security patches for longer than the current ones, I can put off reinstalling (see point a) and going through the whole downloading and installing everything again. And then there's the tedious and frustrating process of updating windows again, bypassing all the WGA checks, and generally sitting around waiting for that sorry excuse for an operating system to get itself into a semi-usable state. I think I have a copy of SP2 somewhere which will save me some work, but still... :?
