One of the hardest things about linux is the occasional use of the terminal shell. Bash isnt too terribly complicated, but looking at it from the beginning can be mind boggling.

Here is a nice little web site that will take you through the basics of the terminal.

Its probably also useful for OSX users.

this looks like the same bunch i tried to learn shell scripts from. Thanks for the tip.

After further examination, I take that back. This is the same bunch I tried to learn shell scripting from (more my fault than theirs...;) This was sort of the beginning of it. i did learn something from it, tho...

Another idea is to buy a manual and put it in the bathroom. Every time you have go there, pick it up a learn a new command :D

?learn one command a day?

?post it notes on your monitor?

it'll soon become second nature.

Learn enough of the shell to run a PERL script.

Problem solved.

I cannot get the page to work_today, nothing wrong with the link as it worked yesterday and I also cannot load the page from google today.

I’ll try again latter, as the first few pages were enjoyable reading.

there's nothing wrong with the site; to the contrary, I was able to plug in the scripts into cygwin (should be called cygwon't...;) and have them run just fine. I have a blinking recognizance of how scripts work, so I'd recommend them.

now if I can just get through that 600+ page PDF file that was posted a couple weeks back...;0

When I set the first time in my live in front of a computer in the late 1980s there was only the UNIX-shell. So to learn to handle this box, there was no other way to do so (I even wrote documentation with the vi).

I'll admit, I use baby!linux. I use it as my secure web browsing platform and typing platform. I don't do much else, though I'm capable. Just never was arsed to mess with something that works. However, when working stops, it's nice to know how to fix again, so I'll be having a look at this link when I can. Never hurt anyone to learn something like this.

There was a while ago an job interview and I think I failed because I said the least import thing by designing a piece of SW is the GUI ... the faces turned.

I am certain I have no brother - but my family name is in Germany, where I grow up, quite unusually, but it is more common North Holland in the State of New York.

Get a separate partition and try to install a Unix-like without a graphical installer

That should begin to crack that shell wide open
