I'm browsing from a 400Mhz G3 (ppc) 1999 iMac with 320MB of RAM and Debian Squeeze.

Yes but it's PowerPC based, so technically whilst a slower clockspeed (and FLOPS rating) it is a underlying superior architecture. Also: PPC based Macs FTW

Yes, but for comparison purposes it's maybe equivalent to an 800MHz single-core Intel... still doesn't compare favorably to your overpowered double 3GHz quad-core.

Then you probably wouldn't like my SPARC system's specs...

MORE powerful than the juggernaut you described above? 16GB of RAM, for crying out loud... and at 1066MHz... I bet that thing even runs KDE4 well.

By far the best machine owned by anyone in my immediate family is my MacBook. 2.2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB of 667MHz DDR2 RAM. Cheap integrated graphics- GMA x3100. I think that laptop is a tad overpowered- the typical user doesn't need multiple cores or a whole ton of RAM.

The last Mac I loved was my PowerMac G5, man I love that thing.

Anyway hint:

The CPU type in my newest Sparc machine:

It's an UltraSparc T2

don't ask me why I bought it, I don't even know, I don't even need that much power...

I really want a PowerMac G5. Those things had some seriously insance specs for back in the day, and they would still be perfectly adequate general-use machines for at least the next 10 years, perhaps even longer.

...and another year's old thread comes out of the vault...;)

I got two under the desk, neither is that fancy (no water pipes cooling the thing, aliens didn't assemble it, etc.

1) An ASUS system board, Pentium 4 (I think), 2 gig of memory, 2 HDs, 90G total space, 2 burners, a floppy, and ....that's about it.

2) a dual- core AMD, 2 gig memory, 300g HD, 2 burners, no floppy, 2 missing front plates to cover the HD....

1 monitor, keyboard, and mouse, with a swtichbox.

It serves me...;)

Approximately half a year actually, but times means nothing to me, for I have a DeLorean.

My Dual G5 still is better than mostx86 machines for video editing,
Example:
Xvid MPEG4 file
upscaled to: 1920x1080
Deinterlaced (can't remeber which di I used)
Quarter Pixel precision
Saturation filtering
Motion blender with edge sharpening
length of video: 1 hour

Time to encode: 1 Hour 9 Minutes (approximately)

Just completely overhauled everything in my computer. A surge killed almost everything in my system. Took forever to install the backup. Glad I did it.

OSes Windows Vista Ultimate 64 bit SP2. Ubuntu 9.04 "Jaunty Jackalope" 64 bit

Mainboard: MSI 790FX-GD70

hard disks: Two OCZ 250 GB solid state drives (Operating systems) RAID 0 array
Two WD Velociraptor 300GB 10,000RPM drives (everything else) No RAID

Video Cards: 4 MSI ATi Radeon HD4890 877Mhz CrossFireX PCIe

Sound Card: CREATIVE, Sound Blaster® X-Fi Titanium Fatal1ty Professional, 7.1 channels, 24-bit 192KHz, PCIe x1

Processor: AMD, Phenom™ II X4 955 Quad-Core 3.2GHz, AM3

RAID card: PROMISE, FastTrak TX4310 SATA II RAID Controller, 4 ports, Levels 0/1/10/5 PCI

Network card: BIGFOOT NETWORKS, Killer NIC Network Card PCI

disk drive: LG CD/DVD RW combo with Lightscribe

RAM: MUSHKIN, 8GB (4 x 2GB) Ascent XP3-12800 PC3-12800 DDR3 1600MHz

Case: Thermaltake Xaser (kinda heavy, but I like it)

Liquid cooling system: used parts from different manufactures. Just a single processor, quad video card system with a dual loop. Black fluid

Case lighting: Blue

Monitor: eMachines 17 inch CRT. It's starting to act strange. Need to find a cheap LCD monitor as a replacement.

My fan controller, speakers, card reader and case fans weren't killed by the surge.

4GB Corsair XMS2 RAM

Windows 7 RC x64, XP, Debian
2x Asus DRW-1814BLT super-multi DVDRW with Lightscribe
Internal 250MB Zip drive for copying stuff to really old computers
LG L194WT 19" widescreen LCD
5.1 surround speakers

[geek boast]Other computers in my room:
Eee PC 901 (upgraded to 2GB RAM)
iMac G3 400MHz slot-loading
Acorn A7000+
Sun Ultra 5
DEC MicroVAX 3100

Amstrad NC100
HP Jornada 545 (Pocket PC)

8085 SBC, self-built
6502 SBC, self-built
Z80 SBC, self-built
Z180 SBC, self-built
6309 SBC, self-built

And downstairs, because it is so big it should be transported on a pallet and so heavy it takes a few big blokes to lift, a Sun E4500 with 12 processors and 10GB RAM.

In the garage, a whole bunch of old computers (BBC, Spectrum etc) collected by me and my Dad over years.[/geek boast]

I have 2 computers but I will post the specifications on the one which I'm using the most and it has Linux on it:

Powerbook G3 "Lombard" with Debian Lenny (Linux)
CD-ROM 24X
Harddrive: 40GB Hitachi IDE hdd
RAM: 320 MB

The Powerbook "Lombard" was produced in 1999, which simple math says it's 10 years ago now. It runs Linux just excellent and I have no problems with sound, graphics or whatever, everything just works 24 hours a day. The force of Linux.
