DOS 3.1, discounting TRS-DOS and whatever the heck Tandy Model 1's, Commodor PETs and Apple II's "ran". I've used every major version/revision since 3.1 (except MS Bob, not that it was an OS). I seem to recall using versions that didn't support 3½" floppies, which would, if memory serves, predate 3.1, but I'm not positive.

A number of people are making this type of statement, that since Windows 3.1 through Windows ME ran on "top" of DOS, they are DOS. The original post is the first "operating system" used... Windows 3.1 onwards had system management components built in (only memory management with Windows 3.1, that I'm aware of) that are not present in MS-DOS, therefore can be considered OS's in their own right, even if MS-DOS is required to run them. Certainly Windows 95 were capable of much that DOS alone was not capable of.
