HELP!! ! Any free antivirus out there?
I usually mention it (http://www.avira.com/), along with Avast! (http://www.avast.com/) and AVG (http://free.grisoft.com), as one of the three best antivirus program.
All three are free, and don't nag you too much about their non-free versions.
All three are regularly up in the top few most effective antivirus programs (the others being non-free).
All three are NOT poorly concealed viruses (which is what happens if you aren't careful about whom you get your protection from - such as the well known virus called Norton ).
The same as you, I also recommend Spybot (http://www.safer-networking.org/) (for the nice handling of start-up code, in the Advanced mode) and AdAware (http://www.lavasoft.com/) (just to have a second string to your adware/malware checks).

awesome! I'm not the only one that uses that configurations... my favorite part about the virus scan on avira is how it's called "luke filewalker" LMAO super special awesome!! !
clamav for windows(http://www.clamwin.com), avast(http://www.avast.com),avg personal ed(http://free.grisoft.com), avira antivir free ed(http://www.free-av.com), pc-tools anti-virus(http://www.pctools.com) <<== those are all the major free ones that i know of
i used to use a mac until it took a dump on me, so right now i am using a hand-me-down pentium 4 with ubuntu on it (as far as i am concerned - linux, *bsd and os x are kissin cousins - a little inbred maybe )
what i mean by inbred is that linux has upteen zillion different distros(and they all share the same basic code base) and there are at least 5 major desktop-based bsd distros for office/workstation use and a few zillion specialized ones(like for making an old celeron into a firewall/router for example) - including os x(with *bsd and os x both sharing the same basic code base - difference is os x has tweaks for apple hardware so driver disks are not needed - and with ppc based hardware (my late mac used a ppc g4) os x ran ppc software for mac os 9 and older with a special virtual machine called classic mode - thats when os x opened up a window and then booted os 9.22 just in that window and the older app ran in the window and rest of your screen was os x).
Actually, any decent antivirus is going to slow down your computer because of the scanning process. I'm an MCSA With CompTIA A+ and CompTIA Net+ and have been working professionally in the industry for about 6 years. I'm a reseller for ESET Nod32 and formally managed McAfee's enterprise software for a very large company. ESET is the only antivirus, except maybe Kaspersky, that's worth installing and using, and it's the only one I will resell without feeling dishonest. AVG and AVAST are worthless, and I've had to reformat countless computers because of reinfections. Private message me if you require further elaborations or contact [email protected] .
As an example, I tried Avast, AntiVIR, and AVG all on my fiance's computer. She downloads torrents, watches movies on the internet, and gets all kinds of [attempt to circumvent the word filter removed by lau] on her Komputer. After I installed ESET, it has successfully blocked and eliminated every potentially malicious and/or unwanted application/bug/virus/program that the computer was exposed to. It has saved me countless hours of having to copy her data to my network drive, scan it using Nod32, format and reinstall the OS on her machine, and recopy her data. I'm all about saving time, and all the clients I've installed the program on are 100% happy with it
Vipre is a cool up-and-comer, and has the lightest performance impact of all - BY FAR. In addition, it isn't split by a money-hungry firm into "malware version" and "virus version" like others do. It does both.
The best FREE antivirus, however, is Microsoft Security Essentials. It only works if you have a legit copy of Windows, but it is the best FREE antivirus (or at least up there).

Generally, though, there's a great ignorance about viruses. Astounding ignorance. Viruses used to be sloppy and noticeable, but now many of them are rootkits, carefully written to hide themselves, and most people who are infected and whose antiviruses tell them that they are clean, will never even know it.
In addition, 99.99% of antiviruses are unable to clean modern viruses once they detect them. They can only clean the old-school, sloppy ones, and middle-of-the-road spyware.
That is the truth. If you don't have realtime filesystem scanner active, then you're an idiot, because the only way to stop a modern virus is to stop its first execution.
If you do have a filesystem scanner active, and think it will stop everything, you're also an idiot. But at least a safer idiot.
P.S.
McAfee is a bloated ineffective nightmare since 1995.
Norton doesn't update often enough, is slow, and fails at "remediation tasks".
Kaspersky is FULL of paranoid, useless self-protection features, yet lets viruses slip right by. Also it is SLOW.
BitDefender is made in Romania. "Hello sir how may I help you my name is Vince and I am from... Texas. Yes." Garbage.
AVG has been garbage since inception. It's just a checkbox in system tray that makes you feel good. In version 6 sometimes it reported that filesystem scanner was active, and then failed to detect EICAR test file (and anything else), and then you find out that on some IDE drivers the scanner simply... didn't. Amateurs.
F-Prot is an antivirus that appears to be ran by one person, or a company so slow and ineffective that it appears to consist of one person. Slow scanner and sloooow updates.

You gave great information, but you didn't mention ESET. There is always a performance hit to real-time filesystem scanning, especially with more advanced heuristics. As you increase the level of heuristics scanning, your performance suffers greatly. For some users, I've found it simply necessary to always enable real time protection with the most strict and automatic updating and cleaning settings. Personally, I only enable ESET's web protection but scan everything I acquire prior to executing it.
There are also a variety of root kit detectors out there for free, but you all must realize that the advanced root kits can simply avoid detection from the common scanners. I like the phrase once heard that is to "practice safe hex." It is the most effective defense. I do have to say that McAfee home and business software is absolutely crap, including their HIPS [host intrusion prevention] and ePO [remote admin suite] products. Even with the most paranoid settings and the latest definitions, it didn't stop any of the malware/adware/rootkits from infesting the computers, and as the information security engineer, I was always the one that had to pull the junk off and do forensics to make sure we weren't having data loss and to determine the extent and source of the infection. I spent so much time managing that product for about 10,000 nodes that I never had time to do anything else!
In my own recent experience, besides the rise of botnets via root kits and control drops starting with a little sql injection of a script link to somewhere in Bulgaria, the fake anti-virus market is booming. I make a lot of money from fixing those problems when users get sucked into downloading them, unless, of course, they've purchased ESET Nod32 Anti-virus license from me
I apologize that I forgot to provide this link. Though nothing substitutes a good eval and test run, this site can help you decide easily what the worst products are and narrow it down: http://www.av-comparatives.org/ . The bottom line is that you generally have to pay for good protection because of the manual labor involved in maintaining an accurate signature database and refining your heuristics code.
I only used ESET web scanner, and it did seem to be the most effective web scanner I used. I haven't used their actual "real" product.
Also, heuristic algorithms... the beauty of programming is that there's an infinite amount of ways to approach something. It takes cleverness, know-how, problem-solving. Antiviruses, in theory, can be both faster AND have better heuristics, just like there are some games that are beautiful and run at 60fps, while others look fugly and run at 30fps.
I have previous used AVAST and AVG but have switched to Microsoft Security Essentials since it came out. It's actually pretty good - it gets great ratings on accuracy in comparison tests, and it's pretty much "invisible" in terms of not getting in your way. I also like that updates come down daily from Windows Update, which makes the update mechanism completely invisible. It's based on Microsoft's corporate AV solutions which have a good reputation.
It also has the benefit of not requiring you to register or supply an email or obtain a key. You just download and install.
