I forget the program name that did it, think smart draw.
but it worked better with microsoft office applications
like word and visio. Also liked that it would render
the mind map as an outline in word.. Made
it really easy to write up documentation that way.

But that program was 200 dollars and I couldnt get
my boss to buy it, and I dont have that kind of money.

So I use free mind and render the outlines after I am done
with the map.

Actually I have to take that back. While
it doesnt do outlines in Microsoft word,
it does however work with Open office writer.

Not a big fan of the way open office interface looks
but it does function in a way I can use it.

Concentrate on using your computer:
* Isolator (OSX) - "Isolator is a small menu bar application that helps you concentrate. When you're working on a document, and don't want to be distracted, turn on Isolator. A MUST HAVE, specially useful because of executive disfunction.

If you are running compiz on your linux computer(gnome/KDE/XFCE), you have something like these build right in. Turn on the ADD helper in the compiz configuration app. You can start and stop it with <meta>P. The meta key is the same as the windows key on your keyboard. You will likely want to darken the effect as well in the configuration app.

The configuration app is called CompizConfig Settings Manager and you might have to install that.

the best to do list program that I have ever used. repeating tasks, time estimate, location, divide tasks by type (work/study/personal), email reminders and integrates with almost any digital device.

Gnome Do (Link)

It will find and run any program, document, music, email contact ... on your computer based on a couple of letters in the name. It learns what you use most often and adapts to let you find things more quickly. its only for linux, there is supposed to be a mac equivalent called quicksilver, however I have heard it does not work as well

I'm trying out White Noise Lite, an iPhone app. It has a paid version too.

White noise can help drown out sounds that make it harder for me to fall asleep. When I worked in an office where talking and noise was too distracting, I'd have either white noise or familiar music on headphones and it helped.

OSX has Spotlight built in (Cmd+Spacebar),
Quicksilver is also nice too since it has lots of customization.
For PCs I have used Avafind, (Shift+Esc), small and fast, it indexes the whole drive and finds files BY NAME. If you use a clear file-naming scheme it is indispensable. Sadly, it's not free.
