This vey pretty toy is driving me nuts. How to I perform simple functions like scrolling inside this composition box? Can these tasks be done without plugging in a keyboard?

Could you be more specific? I own an iPad 1G, so I know much about them.

From the fact that you mention a keyboard, I assume you are trying to bring up a cursor in a text box, to change where you are typing. I think for an Ipad you press then hold on a specific piece of text, then a light blue square will appear under the text. This square is your cursor and you simply drag it to the part of the text you are trying to edit.

Scrolling something like a web page, you touch the screen with index and ring fingers at the same time then drag the page in a particular direction

I also own iPad too and its really simple, just think of it as a touch screen computer.

You click a text box and a keyboard appears.
You click Safari to go on the Internet.
Pinch the screen to zoom in/out.

You do not need a keyboard although that is optional.

As huntedman mentioned, using two fingers simultaneously allows you to scroll through in-frame tables/lists.

Hmm ... Yes, I want to do what a scroll on a mouse or an arrow on a key board would do. It works fine using my fingers on a page at large, but if I try to reply to a long post, only part of the post comes up in the white box, and I don't seem to be able to scroll within the white box. I've got a work around, but it's a pain and there must be a trick I'm missing. Just played with two fingers and that did something else ... Do I just not have the movement right?

Ok, kept playing, got it to go once ... Totally not made for klutzes like me!

Thanks!!

Glad you like it ;)

I knew myself well enough to skip the iPhone, but this iPad was a gift, and it is cool, but ... Yeah, I have big issues trying to use it.

It can be annoying, since you have to keep your fingers the same distance apart while moving them to get it to work (if you vary the distance it just causes it to zoom in or out). I'd recommend keeping your index and middle finger together while using them to scroll.

Ah, that is the trick. I have been slowly but surely getting better at it :)
