Let me put it this way, i loved Ubuntu, then i installed Natty, i am now using Linux Mint.

I will never upgrade to 11.04, I might just go with GNOME SlackBuild or Debian, maybe Mint if I am in the mood :D

Unity made me cry. I cannot stand it, they are making it too noob friendly.

I mainly just cursed grumbled and was in a foul mood the rest of the day 8)

I have been using Ubuntu 10.10 and Gnome Shell 3. I love it. I have not used Windows in about 3 months. I do work with a little Java, and I am just getting started with C. Anyways, on topic, I do not like the road Ubuntu is going down, it might just be time to switch distro's.

I love Ubuntu 11.04. I hate Unity though. I have always wanted to try Debian, but it's too open for me. Besides, I have Slackware and Gentoo as well as Windows 7, so I always have a backup.

So? One of the main goals of Ubuntu has always been to bring Linux and open source into the mainstream as an alternative to Windows and Microsoft. In order to get more average, and less computer literate, people to use the OS, it has to be made more user-friendly. Ubuntu has always been the Linux distro for noobs.

Any any case, I stopped using Ubuntu 5 months ago, when I got my Mac. So, I haven't even tried Unity.

Unity (and Ubuntu in general now) is a vile abomination.I do not see how Unity is "easier to use" than traditional GNOME.

How is Debian "too open?" It takes like 5 seconds to enable contrib and non-free repos and have all the proprietary stuff you could want. It is still provided and supported, just not installed by default. It's a sensible policy: default to free and open, but leave the option of proprietary stuff available for anyone who wants it.

I downloaded it, and it refuses to work due a backlight issue.

I've been looking for a minimalist, but pretty OS for college (science, mathy sort of stuff). Any alternate LINUX distro that would do the job (and actually work )?

It dies immediately upon boot with a kernel panic for me. :?

I'm not sure what you mean by either minimalist or "pretty." Debian works, and has by far the best selection of science/math software (and all software, actually) available in their repositories. It can be as minimalist or as fancy as you want it to be.

I have a friend who is using it at the moment, and he is simply loving it.
I haven't used Ubuntu in a long time myself, but I have seen the new features and I can't say that I like what I see personally.

I guess this is why I love Arch Linux; I can choose what I want and leave out the crap I don't want.

On one of my desktops, I took the upgrade from 10.10 to 11.04 - a mere 2 GiB of downloads and a few hours of upgrade, with lots of repositories to find how/where to re-enable.

I then saw Unity - and saw that it was just as bad as the UNR rubbish I briefly tried on my netbook - so I went straight to "Gnome Classic".

I've had no great problems, so far, but I don't spent much time using that machine. The only difference I've noticed is that my auto-hide task bars are now irritatingly sluggish.

I can't see myself installing 11.04 anywhere else. I guess I will be looking towards a return to Debian.

I'm using Unity. It's not my favorite. I don't like the menus being farther away than necessary. And the side panel doesn't pop out reliably...

I'm thinking of installing Arch and running xmonad.
