My mom brought up me getting an iphone for a family plan she got. I keep weighing the options but it just doesn't seem worth it to me. From what I can tell, I'd be paying an extra $100-$200 dollars per year compared to what I'm paying now for the phone on monthly fees on top of the phone price ($300). I currently only spend about $100-$200 a year on minutes/texts (each text = 1 min). Any suggestions on when an iphone is actually worth it vs. just a regular cellphone?

In the end this is probably a matter of personal taste. If you don't find your current cellphone to be particularly irritating or clunky to use, the iPhone may feel like a smoother, more refined experience which isn't worth the extra cost.

I personally think that iphones are hard to use. But if you are talking about it purely financially:

x: amount of texts you send
y: amount of minutes you talk
a1: price per minute in your current plan
b1: price per SMS in the new plan
b2: price per minute in the new plan
p: price of the device
l: length of contract in months

get an iphone if:

(x+y)*a1 > x*b1 + y*b2 + p/l

(unless I made a mistake in the math here)

Go with Android. You have more choices. Play with a phone to see if you like it. You can even change the entire look and feel of it.

If your out and about a lot in places you don't know, smart phones can be great. Then theres the games, once again, if your out and about a lot.

I have an iPhone 4, and love it. It's light, without feeling cheap. Good battery life, considering I really don't talk on it all that much, decent camera, and great apps and games. Excellent distraction device.
