You're kidding right? Don't you realize that for a quarter of that price, maybe even an eighth, you'll still have a badassly fast PC? Unless you plan on playing Crysis in 8K resolution with 240FPS, I'd say you're insane. If I'm going to drop roughly $8,000 on something, it better be able to make me a sammich with the push of a button at the very minimum. Even my car didn't cost that much.

Wouldn't you want it to be able to produce a fully-customisable woman to give you a blowie at the push of a button, just like that? That's what I'd want for five grand.

It's too much, man. Even my iMac only cost a fourth of that.

Yeah well I knew some of you would think it is insane I don't disagree in principle but I do not drive or for that fact own a car so to me it's like owning a sports car. I appreciate the humour in what you say but I am getting it regardless took me five long years of saving up and well it's going to last a decent amount of time the only things I would need to swap out are the graphics cards and or the SSD drive when much larger sized ones are on the market. As they say live and let live :)

What do you actually plan to use it for?

Seriously, that is mad expensive.

Also, if you do go through with this... Get the current generation i7s, maybe the 2600k?
There is nothing between them, overall, in terms of performance; hell, the 2600k is usually faster!
At a 3rd of the price of the 990, you can't go wrong.

Save the money, or use it for an SSD RAID.

Even at idle, your current system will drain as much power as an iron, if you plan to run it 24/7... I'd hate to see your power bill.

Whatever you do... 5 years of saving or not, just hope that it keeps you happy for the next 5 years...

Well the idea is, if you own a sports car but don't drive it like it deserves to be driven then you are just over compensating for something. :D

Wait an extra 3 months and go for Ivy Bridge, it'll probably be the last last release on 1155LGA, might as well get the latest/best if your ability to upgrade might be in doubt.

Are you sure you're gonna need it? it has 6 Cores but nearly no application or game can use that many. Unless you are into coding, that will be a waste of money. Same goes for the AMD Bulldozer (8 real cores) if you're considering that - Windows 7 wont be able to use any of them maximally, you have to wait for Windows 8, or go Linux.

Make sure that the MoBo has support for 3TB drives.

Sure you're gonna use them? Get one now, if you feel you need more "omph", get another one.

Corsair Force 3 240GB SSD

Some SSD's have problems - Corsair Force included. Get the "GT" version, it has less problems, or go Intel SSD's.

Office 2010 Pro

Why you need that for? Why not get OpenOffice?
If you're a student or are employed, you can get discounted versions of Office 2010 Pro.

I know - it is fun to spash out money on cool stuff, but that effect wears off and you may regret buying all that stuff.
If i had that amount to spend, i'd go for two 120 GB REVODRIVE X2 and run them in software Raid 0, that get you close to 3GB/Sec.

i spent around the same amount of money on a pc once,

2 years later i upgraded for 750 pounds and got a better pc out of it.

though watercooling will be a major part of the price for such a pc.

i would also reccomend you look at the newest ati cards (i currently use a single 6950 and no game has given me graophics trouble at standard clock when running 1920x1200, usually 8x AA)
they are a third of the price, about 10% slower and you can run 4 alongside eachother if you really need that much oomph

get two of those for the price of a single nvidia card and if you need more buy two more, that said the motherboard would require a pretty hefty pci bus to utilize that much power.

i will be buying a new motherboard (i was thinking of the exact one you are looking at)
a 2600k i7, new ddr3 rams with a cl of 7, better to have speed than size.
and i will be using the gfx i have now with the option of another, the 6950 can be unlocked to run almost like the 6970 for 65% of the price or something like that

all in all it will be around 500 pounds without a new gfx and thrown into my current chassis.

Thanks for all the valid pointers etc appreciated but I am sticking to this it is after all what I want to do and I am going to be learning various things including coding I will get as much as I can out of it as possible I note the comments on the various parts but to be honest would prefer to give it a chance to see how it is going to go an not mess around changing the spec again. I am quite happy with it at the moment.

The i7 990X is a last-generation Intel processor. Wait for Socket LGA 2011. The i7 2600K comes close to the 990X (when only 4 cores are used, not many if any at all games take advantage of a six core CPU) for how much of the price? 30%?

Also, why do you legally buy your software? Office Pro Plus, Windows 7 Ultimate and Nero will set you back a LOT of cash. You can download those programs for free and it's not like Microsoft would care. Will save you money for actual useful things, for example future upgrades. I don't know if this forum likes me promoting piracy but oh come on, prices for software are INSANE.

Lastly, you'd be better off Crossfiring 2 6990s, and I don't know if you can but if you can, throw another 6970 in there as well. That way you'll have 5 GPUs in one system, ergo monster performance for an insane price. At least you're building it yourself, you're not crazy enough to actually have it built by Alienware or worse, Genesis Origin :)

My two cents.

I won't say I have a problem with people using pirated software but I have decided to be legitimate in EVERY single aspect and I am sticking to the original spec it is after all my call at the end of the day. Thanks once again for the input!

i for one would love to see a picture of that watercooling once you are done with it,

i have been looking at milling my own heads and resevoir so i can cut costs (CNC should make this a breeze)
i only have to get a hold of some Al 1350 or Al 1050 for a decent price , the shop i use usua;;y only supply themselves with 3xxx and 5xxx alloys.
the blocks themselves are "finished"(drawn out in cad, ready for milling) but i might have to change the mounting if i buy a new mobo

apearantly specific alloys can be hard to find :?

You are paying a lot for a system that's about to be obsoleted. Per core, 990X is slower than 2600K. So except for heavily multi-threaded tasks 990X won't be any faster. And even if you need such power, Sandy Bridge-E will be out by November, why invest in a system that has no upgrade path?

I beg to differ the only gain from the new chips over this one having talked on the phone to the manufacturer was a measly 15% so I will not be changing the CPU/Mobo combination for the sake of such a small percentage gain. Really not worth it,
