Well, terminal still looks pretty nice these days. Does not affect me.

Fix'ed.

And less serious, I don't care much for smart phones. The design doesn't worry me as much as much as those boot locks I heard Windows 8 were going to introduce.

I hate how computers are becoming like phones.

There is no reason for the new UI. The preview I used was cumbersome not intuitive at all. If opening a full-screen window that isn't usual Explorer (like something from the replacement of Start, the start screen whatever) there is no sensible way to close it - that is which irks me the most...

Yes I don't know what they were thinking. Clearly they want appeal to the younger generations, none of whom are statistically likely to own a Windows phone...

There is a reason. The gap between phones, tables and PCs is shrinking and they're trying to hit all with one product. It's clearly not viable to run Windows Explorer on any current phones, because of both screen real estate issues and the fact that even the Win7 Aero UI is starting to feel a little long in the tooth. It also lacks the sleekness needed for HTPC applications. I have no idea whether they will succeed in developing a UI that completely covers Windows on all three platforms, but clearly the current incarnation of Metro is not it.

The challenge will be to shove all the file management features in Explorer into a UI that is ludicrously simple for the basic function of finding and opening files, but to make sure *ALL* of the features are in there.

Yes indeed - or to put it another way:

I think microsoft will have to seriously consider what is beyond windows and what will replace it, to become a universal OS. Windows is getting rather old tech and I think it is time for a new approach. Business's are even still using windows xp because it is too expensive to keep updating and training staff.

I have been lately fixated on the future of technology, my folks are getting fed up with me as my in law said he is 76 years old and he could be dead by then. My point is that people are still using crt tvs and even my friend still uses vhs.

Humans are always behind with technology.

There's nothing about Windows that precludes it outright from functioning as a next gen kernel. Windows is just an API, a concept.

I have little interest in MS products, However as i understand it the GUI is reportedly designed to be more effective when used with a touch screen. Do the folks at redmond not have kids, I can only imagine the mess the average child will make of the screen!! !! !!

Windows users do yourself a favour, install a Linux/GNU distro and save yourself all the pain and angst, and for that matter quite a few dollars

Completely agree with switching to Linux, however I'm afraid Ubuntu (the distribution you're likely to try) is going the wrong direction.

Really, I don't mind change -- I've grown accustomed to GNOME 3 after years of GNOME 2. But seriously, Microsoft? I don't plan on getting a touch screen other than my Android device any time in the near future . . . .

I thought it was pretty cool. Will be more testable to me once it releases officially.

I just wish Microsoft would quit trying to make operating systems they do pretty well with development environments though.

I tried the win8 CP and it confused the living hell out of me. I have some issues with Windows as it is. I prefer at least the perceived simplicity of OS X, but Win8 takes whatever simplicity gains MS made with win7 and blows them all to hell. I actually had a meltdown just trying to figure out how to do what used to be VERY simple tasks. ARRRRGHHH!!

Sorry, OS X for me.

Raised on MacOS and Windows 9x, I've never really liked a desktop interface more than others.

Now if they made a desktop/folder interface intertwined with a command line like AutoCad, that'd probably sell me.

 Mind you, I shouldn't be acting so smug, considering I've been fighting with my Linux box on and off for the past week.

It's strange how people keep trying to make desktop environments that seem more designed for smart phones. Unity, GNOME 3, Win 8... Don't people realize that there are still people out there using laptops?!?
