And it probably runs faster than your 16 core 320TB RAM with 4GB/S SSD Windows Box...
i doubt it i gained a few % but that was it under uniengine, that was between win7 and kubuntu 10.4
if you dont believe me try running a comparison yourself using the uniengine(one of the only cross platform opengl benchmarks i know)
you could also try one of the several burn in testers for cpu calculation times if that is what your interested in, my maxxpi2 test calculated pi to 16M digits in 52 seconds on normal priority while listening to youtube and 10 tabs open,(ie. just ran it on this win7 installation while writing this post)
in short your comparison is hyperbolic and while i agree linux runs more efficiently it doesnt undo 5 years or more of actual hardware development, especially in the GFX area, i had your card(actually i had the 4870gx2 version,) and changed to the one i had now and still felt quite the improvement both in benchmarks and subjective experience.
my specs
core i5 2550k @ 4,3 ghz using scythe ninja 3
8 gb ddr3 1600 mhz 6-6-6-18 ram
2 tb raid 0 array using 2 seagate 7.5k rpm disks
260gb 15k rpm hp server harddisk
ATI HD6950 2gb unlocked to HD6970 -2 pipelines
