Yes, here, but what about there, where there's nothing?

There is a great book that touches on the idea: The Elegant Universe. It is basically explaining General Relativity and Quantum Mechanics, but it is mostly about Superstring Theory. It is very well written. But yes, I think that "before" the universe there was just potential. Perhaps that potential energy came from the collapse of a previous universe...I don't think we'll ever find that out.

Yes, well, since life is the universe becoming conscious of itself, how would it/we know?

On the other hand, self-knowledge is the only thing that really matters.

Yes, there WAS only potential before the universe was created. That potential was God's word. When God spoke the word, that energy was released and the universe was created.

By the way, I do not think that science and religion need to be separate. I think they support each other. Good example is the idea above.

Maybe we're just part of a computer program. That would explain all the 010000010111001101110000011010010110010101110011 and 010011100101010001110011. Bad programs.

Hopefully, who ever's running this program is on a Mac  (I don't want gravity to turn off one day!)

I have no idea what you are talking about. :?

a) Who is this 'God'?
b) What was his 'word'?
c) How your above hypothesis correlate with the observable evidence of the cosmos?

I found a binary translator and hosted it onto my website so you can make and decode binary

the URL is here: http://www.freewebs.com/ki3o/binary.html

as a little test, try translating this. (copy/paste)

I rather doubt that the universe is written in ASCII. :D

Before the universe????

I think I'd liken the existing universe to be located in god's navel....which would make us navel lint.

As somehow navel lint does appear from nothing...therefore, before the universe there was a clean naval.

No, no... before the universe there was just navy blue.

It was probably just some four-dimensional lob of mass inside another, more complicated five-dimensional universe, where entire four-dimensional universes form and die like stars...or something. I don't know. I'm bad with science.

Reality is not maths however. There WAS a before and my opinion is that the universe goes through cycles of 'banging' and 'collapsing'.

That's my thinking as well.

There was water and a bunch of skinny dipping women and cats that could walk on water.
