Gotcha. I'm experimenting with making things happen in plain old OpenGL that most people use CUDA for, which means you don't need a GeForce to run it.

I was all set to blow the nest-egg on an i5 but an email from the ex-wife's lawyer reminded me to keep my cash saved for the lawyer fund. ;)

But I got very lucky and did some trading (no cash) to get a Gateway desktop with:

Intel Q9400 quad 2.66GHz processor, 8GB DDR2-800 and a GeForce GT 430 video card. It's "enough" to play a few games and get all my work done (with a little folding@home on the side!) Pity the BIOS is password locked by the previous owner - good thing it works perfectly.

Laptop (also by trading, no cash) is a spiffy Acer 13.3" w/ a good keyboard, 1st-gen i3 processor & 4GB DDR3.

I have a 64GB SSD I'm not sure if I want to use on the lappy or desktop - it's not super fast but it rates 6.8 on WEI vs. 5.9 for my mechanical disks. I'll probably move it to the lappy to extend the ~4h battery even further!

Backup system: Dell tiny SFF; Core2Duo 2GHz, 4GB DDR2, Radeon 5450 video. It would make a great HTPC if I wanted to, but the PS3 does that already.

My main machine has an AMD Phenom 8600B 2.3 GHz CPU (triple core), 2 GB RAM and a GeForce 8400GS. It runs Slackware Linux (I do dual boot with Windows Vista, but hardly use that).

On the computer I'm on now is one of my Dad's computers in the office. They are identical, except this has a wireless internet card, the main computer doesn’t. No brand for this computer, since I built it.

Linux: Ubuntu 12.04 (Precise Pangolin) 32 Bit/Kernel Linux 3.2.0-27-generic-pae/GNOME 3.4.2. User Interface: Unity
Pentium(R) Duel-Core CPU E5400 @ 2.70GHz (x2)
Graphics: Intel(R G41 x86/MMX/SSE2
1.0TB HDD (7800RPM/65MB Cache)
2GB DDR2 800 MB 6400S
Linksys WLAN 54MB PCI IEEE 802.11 b/g
ASUS Bluetooth USB adapter

Ports:
USB 2.0 x7
HDMI x1
DVI x1
VGA x1
(58 in 1 Card Reader)
SD Card Slot x1
MS Card Slot x1
SD/MMC Card Slot x1
XD/SM
Ethernet Port x1
Audio In x1
Audio Out x1

Software:
Mozilla Firefox 14.0.1
Mozilla Thunderbird 14.0
LibreOffice 3.5.3.2
VLC 2.0.1

I bought bought another motherboard to upgrade the hardware, to Intel Core i7, and DDR3 RAM, but my Dad made me take it back. He didn't want me spending my money on computer parts, and he only likes buying stuff from his company, like writing a check from his company. He also didn't approve because we didn't need it, the computers work fine. Me, I'm sorta fussy or obsessive about hardware, and like it when it they use hardware more upto date. I built this computers, just over two years ago.

I was going to buy the high-end stuff, but couldn't afford it then. It really isn't bad, and the price I paid for it back then, I don't think was bad either.

Upgraaaade! :D

i3-2120
8GB DDR3-1600
and the best part, a snazzy 120GB Intel 330 SSD. The drive is so insanely fast.... :D

Video is only my standby card, a GeForce GT 430, but it can play games at mid-to-high detail so it'll do until I get some big bucks in the next few days.

At my mom's house:
AMD Athlon II x4 2.6ghz factory, overclocked to 3.0ghz at the moment
4GB of DDR3 1600
500GB 7200rpm hard drive
ATI Radeon 5850 1GB RAM

At my dad's house:
AMD Athlon II x2 3.0ghz
4GB of DDR3 1333
120GB 7200rpm ancient IDE hard drive, temporary replacement
ATI Radeon 4850 1GB RAM

*edit: some more stuff that I wanted to say

Also, now that Intel has started using the i3 i5 and i7 labels to obfuscate the actual specs of the processor, I have decided to never buy an intel chip again

Your loss - Intel's got AMD solidly beaten the last 2-3 rounds. There's nothing obscure either... the i3 has two cores + 2 hyperthreading cores, the i5's have 4 cores and speed boost, the i7's add another 4 hyperthreading cores over the i5. Way better performance at about half the voltage and not a huge difference in price either.

>>> ANANDTECH bench utility - compare processors.

Those game specs are particularly nice.

That's another thing. The fact that there is a difference in price means that I will go with the cheaper chip. I don't have very much money, so anything I can save on means I can afford more RAM and Storage Space, which are the two things I am constantly short of.

Then the Intel G530 for less than a lousy $40 absolutely *obliterates* anything at even close to its price range. No question. Check the link and compare the Pentium G620 (essentially the same chip with a tiny bit more cache) to anything you want. I totally understand budget rigs...

This i3 & mobo only cost $150 CDN, another $40 for 8GB of crazy-fast RAM... only $50 more expensive than an absolute bottom-end system but twice the performer.

ThinkPad T420:
Arch
14" 1600x900 display
Dual core 2.80GHz Core i7 2640M
Intel HD Graphics 3000
8GB 1333MHz DDR3
160GB SSD
9 cell extended battery

I wish I'd saved a few hundred dollars and stayed with the stock i5 'cause the only time I notice the difference from the Core 2 in my last notebook is when compiling stuff.
