I am new and am interested in robotics after watching robot wars for so long. I also have been interested in creating my own robots (not necessarily for combat.)

With robotic kits, what is the best sign for quality, a good first company to get models from and how can you tell if they are pricing fairly? I figured these questions are best answered by someone who is a longtime robotics enthusiast.

I've been interested in robotics my whole life, I only have been making them for a few years. (so I can't really say i'm an expert!)

There is an awesome website here http://www.societyofrobots.com/

It has tutorials on almost all aspects of robotics (programming, builds etc) for all levels and budgets. This website really help me grasp the basics of robotics, it's worth checking out! Hopefully some other people on WP can suggest more.

Thank you, just having a good first website is a good start!

I have heard the electronics on walking robots is far more advanced than on wheeled robots. Is this true?

Yeah, walking robots are far more advanced than those with wheels. Wheeled robots are much cheaper to build as well.

Wheeled robots don't need as expensive servos, and usually require less battery power.

Robotics can be complicated and time consuming, but if you're interested.. it's lots of fun!

Not a kit, but I have had alot of fun with the projects in this book. The robots are pretty simple, but fun ( and cheap!) to build. Good information in general.

Another good one is Robot Builders Bonanza, but this one may be a bit dated.
