I am trying to teach myself to make a website and use SQL in it, since those are skills in demand in the software industry.

Using SQLCourse.com and SQLCourse2.com, I taught myself quite a bit about using SQL queries. Now, I want to create a SQL database on my own Mac, which I can query to get more practice as well as give me ideas for a website.

So far, what I've seen are 30-day trials that charge $20 or so afterwards (one time.) Anyone know of one that's less than that or free?

You have fink and/or macports installed on your Mac, do you not? IIRC Berkeley DB is available on the fink repositories. There's also MySQL from Oracle (yech!) as well as Postgres. Of course, you'll need XCode in order to install those applications, as they are only available as source code.

Try PostgreSQL, MySQL, Oracle Database Express Edition. They are free.

MySQL is included with MAMP, and you can create databases in no time with it in your web browser via phpMyAdmin.
