Jesus Christ! What do you people have against Vista? You people act like Vista touched you in your danger zone! Typical Linux-users.

That's not a problem for me since my laptop is Windows Vista capable.

Edited: If you can't afford to upgrade your PC in order to install Vista, well tough luck. Guess you have to stick with XP.

How curious. Do you actually have Vista? Or is it just that you have that label stuck on the laptop?
Assuming that you actually do have Virus (oops, sorry Vista), is there anything that it does (or even, that it says it might do) that Linux hasn't been doing stably for at least the past year? (Other than play games, which I don't happen to be terrificly interested in.)

Is there a Linux version that can install to one of these (just to try it out):

-a file in an NTFS partition
-boot from a CD/DVD
-boot from an iPod

Also, can you even play DVDs in Linux?

I through Open Office 2.2 on my system last week. I thought it was really impressive for the price, but unfortunately I still preferred MS Office, and I found Open Office wasn't able to import complex files 100% correctly.

Still, if my work didn't pay for Office for me (and sort of make me need it), I'd just use OO I'm sure.

Yes. Several distros do that these days.

Yes. I've used such distros to fix broken Windows machines. One rather nice one for that is the Insert live CD. I've also just finished upgrading my Ubuntu from 6.10 to 7.04 - one reboot (because it replaced the kernel). Ubuntu will run from CD. No HDD required.

Dunno about this. Probably. Certainly you can boot and run off a memory stick.
Wolfpup wrote:

Yep. I can't play them under Windows, but can under Linux.

I've found that OO can open MS Office files that MS Office has failed to open.

So use both. :)

Were I to switch to Ubuntu, would I be able to use programs such as FLStudio, Sony SoundForge, and say.. World of Warcraft (though I haven't played that game in a loooong time)?

well at least in my case, vista did. it was called having to work as a game tester testing a game on a beta version of vista. it left a bad taste in my mouth and generally, i haven't heard much better stories about it since it's come out.

it's a garbage OS that is still a good year or so away from being a viable upgrade to XP.

it probably won't even play games well any time in the near future considering just how much power is needed to get vista running rather less the power needed on top of that to run any video game.

I'm considering setting up a dual boot XP-pro / Ubuntu on my desktop. My main concern is software. I use ProTools MPowered, Soundforge, Photoshop, Corel Painter, pretty often. I started using GIMP before Photoshop but for all its benefits, it just isn't quite there yet. I have serious doubts that ProTools will work well under virtualization like Xen. We'll see I guess.

Thanks for the information! I'll have to give this a shot. (Although I'm also considering getting a Macbook/Pro...)

OK, I've just booted up a live CD of Ubuntu 7.04 Feisty Fawn. I had numerous headaches trying to get my wireless USB card running under Edgy Eft. I'm definitely gonna install this! :D
