it depends on what the torrent is. for what i use torrents for i would guess they should be illegal but idk what i would to without them (but their are many torrents that dont contain pirated content)

But out of respect for the owner of a piece of work, they should not be abused as they often are.

If you are asking whether data sent over the internet (by any means) might violate laws, that's another question.

If you are asking whether ISPs should be allowed to throttle torrents, that's yet another question.

Torrents can be used to share pirated things but they can also be used to distribute open source programs and so on. So no, they shouldn't be illegal, it just depends on what they are used for.

If you are using someone else's equipment/connection, it is entirely their right to impose any (stupid) rules they like on your usage.

I have been told that some service providers are miffed that their clients are making full use of their backchannel for data. I expect they will eventually get around to imposing monthly UPload quotas.

Who uses Torrents to download anything that's FREE? No one.

I still don't get why people like to use Torrents for anything (not even movies and albums for free entice me that much). I can only think of disadvantages to Torrenting....

1. The download speeds are usually slower than even cheap DSL connections.

2. They can be easily tracked. I would be scared to death if I receive a cease and desist letter from MIAA or Sony Entertainment.

3. There's no one big server that the download is hosted on. Users have to seed it, and chances are, a lot of Torrent downloads go unseeded.

Torrents suck.

The various pro-copyright groups which exerted significant lobbying pressure to try to shut down Pirate Bay. Now, I disapprove of piracy and much of what Pirate Bay did was just straight-up piracy, but P2P technology really can't discriminate between someone sharing the latest Ubuntu or pirating new movie releases. The folks involved in the court case against Pirate Bay would probably prefer to just get rid of torrents as a whole, not caring (or perhaps not knowing) about the perfectly legitimate uses they have.
