and will now be renting copies of windows and office. This will also allow third party corporations to lease windows based machines without being out of compliance with the windows terms of use.

The big problem is the cost of hardware is falling, bringing the operating system cost to a high percentage relative to the total cost of the machine.

It would be easy to claim that OSX or linux is at fault, but really, its intel and hardware manufacturers that are no friend to the cult of Bill.

Comments?

Last I heard, MS had to stop selling Office entirely? Something about patent violations in their version of XML.

OS X can't really be at fault here, since Apple continues to charge more for the same hardware than other manufacturers. Linux is too small to be making a significant dent in Microsoft's revenue. And most Linux users have paid for a copy of Windows anyways.

Like people who buy PCs are actually going to know how much of the cost is for the hardware and how much is for Windows. They probably won't notice. Heck, most of them probably think they're only paying for the computer and getting the OS for free.

I've installed Linux on 3 computers in the last week. The clients are very happy with it as well. After these people get used to not having to put up with crappy software and malicious software, I'm sure that they will recommend it to their friends. These customers have voice no complaints so far.

Hey, I would also want to have one of your Linux computers if I ever live in Florida, the Sunshine/Gator state. :)

Any renting of Microsoft's software would be a blessing for me! :)

It's free and cool...

But if I can't use Microsoft. Hello, Linux...

You are looking at it wrong. The customer doesnt have to divide the cost. The cost of the operating system is a barrier for the vendors to remain competitive.

And the customer does see the cost when they need to upgrade windows. 250 bucks for windows 7? Win xp was only 130. So they remember their 286+ cost 3000 dollars and windows was only 90. Now their computer costs 400 and windows is... 250?

See the problem?

Oh you are too clever for me. I made it all up and snuck it onto Microsoft's web site. https://partner.microsoft.com/40104043

I think they just had to stop selling it with particular functionality related to the patent.

Isn't the stoppage of sales sad for MS?

I dont think its a stoppage so much as a saturated market. When you have 95% of the computer population using as customers, its really hard to grow sales. Which is probably the real reason that subsequent versions of windows have escalated in price.
