So? What do all think of the Metro UI in Win8?

IMHO, I think it's the ugliest thing to come to computing since amber monochrome screens.
Whoever designed it must be colorblind.
Also, I really don't like this recent move towards over-simplified UI designs.

IF I ever get Windows 8 I will be operating in classic mode, I have no use for this Metro garbage.
I for one don't think mouse and touch interfaces will ever be able to live in harmony.

I've seen pictures of it and you don't really need big buttons on a desktop, as most people probably don't one a touch screen and it is tiring to use a desktop to use a desktop touch screen after a while.

I really don't care for it. It looks like a giant cell phone interface. It works on a cell phone, but it seems rather pointless on a full sized desktop screen. It is a proven design when it comes to accessibility with inexperienced users, which is something Microsoft seems to want to do a little too hard for my taste with this. But if there is "classic mode" available, then I honestly don't care what the default is, if it is functional to other people.

I like it. It's new and different, it's sort of the same as other touch-based OSs and sort of not. And, once you get to the desktop, Win8 is almost exactly like Win7 etc, only the 'start menu' has really changed.

Think about this, Windows has used the same basic UI since Windows 95, and even then Win95 wasn't that different from every other Windows or from the Macintosh, etc.. Not that Win8 is all that big a departure, but still, Windows 7's UI is almost exactly the same as Windows 95's.

I'm looking forward to the new OS. I'll upgrade to it at some point, unless benchmarks show it to be hugely slow or some other horrible thing arises.

That all said, my main computer has been a Macintosh for about 6 months now, so I won't even see it that much.. but I do like how MS is going for more style instead of just a straight-ahead super-efficient approach.

Well, KDE still looks pretty nice these days. Does not affect me.

I don't think it makes sense for an OS to effectively have two different built in UI's. The developer preview of Windows 8 has an Explorer that's actually a sensible evolution of the Windows 7 Explorer, but then they have this parallel phone-like UI that just imposes itself at times when I don't want to deal with it. If the phone-like UI can't stand on its own as the sole UI for a production desktop OS, they should either build it out until it does or scrap it. To me it looks like Windows Media Center, which is nice looking especially on a large LCD TV, but I ended up working out of Explorer for almost everything on my HTPC.

I don't think it's impossible to have a single UI that is (nearly) as simple as Metro for most tasks, and extends its features more seamlessly when you need it to. Being limited to tiled Windows is so Windows 1.0.

I wonder if Windows 8 is going to come on 5.25" floppy disks, if Metro is like Windows 1.0.

I could just imagine this huge crate arriving on someone's doorstep. Here is your new copy of Win8 8O

In the installer, instead of saying 'a few minutes remaining' it would be 'a few weeks remaining'...

And you would have to sit there the whole time to swap disks.

I'd rather stick with Linux-based OS.

Macroshaft can suck it.

it makes sense that the desktop should have a similar UI as the phone... unfortunately its completely hideous. I got a feeling I'll be sticking with 7 for a looooong time.

I like trying new things and end up liking a new version better. This....I don't think it works. It's great for a touch tablet based system, if you want to run windows software, but to use with a mouse...no...I don't think so. It's klunky. New people will be VERY confused by having to move their mouse to the corners to get running tasks and start buttons and what not. And what? The settings are in two different places. Heck they're all over the place. You have settings at the start menu and then some on the regular UI....This OS is like some hybrid mess. I still think we need to fix the start menu from 7, because it's a little messy like all that came before, but this is just not how to fix it.

I've put one version of it on an old laptop. It's very clumsy to work with. I end up messing up the general interface when trying to select something, and I usually switch to the mode that's basically Windows 7, which I'm used to, but without a start button. It's very hard to work with properly. The looks aren't the worst I've ever seen, but could be much better if they just tried.

I'd call it a clumsy mix of Windows 7 with phone operatings systems.

Windows 8 is going to suck because every second Windows version did in the past. Just look at the history of Windows:

• Windows 3.1: Not very pretty, but stable enough :)

• Windows 95: A buggy, crash-happy mess :x

• Windows 98: MS finally worked out the kinks. Yay :D

• Windows ME: OMG, what a catastrophe!
• Windows XP: Fantastic! Works like a charm

• Windows Vista: Quick, kill it with fire!! ! :eew:

• Windows 7: Best Windows ever! Kudos, MS :hail:

• Windows 8: It's going to be the worst disaster in the history of Microsoft. Wait for Windows 9. It'll be divine.

Totally agree. Every 2nd OS is like an "alpha" release. Consumers pay MS to be software testers. The only bad one I fell for was ME, but I went back to 98se pretty quickly and forgot about my poor judgement.
