Have you used Disc Utility to repair your permissions and verify your hard drive? Do you have DiscWarrior, and have you used it to repair your Directory? These are standard things that should be done frequently even when your computer isn't having any problems.

Hard Disk -> Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility.

Honestly do this. It takes 5 minutes or so to install. you can put it on a usb drive if you want. It's nearly exactly the same as microsoft office.

Free and open-source. Not as polished as MS Office and lacking some features, but more than sufficient for most tasks, especially if you don't do a lot with PowerPoint.
