There's other things you can do to speed up your system.
1) Clear out your browser cache; it takes a snapshot of every page you visit, which add up over time.

2) add memory - usually cheap, and can make a difference.

2a) your page file; once you add memory, usually set min at 1.5 times physical memory, and max at 3 times physical memory.

3) startup programs - a lot of things you may not run all the time. Some things are resource hogs, depending on the program. Maybe leaving a few 'un run' might give you more resources.

4) when you're slow, hit ctrl+alt+del (Windows) and check Task Manager. The higher percentage being used (max is 100%, which usually is when it freezes), the slower it goes. You can check which programs are using the most resources.

But don't skimp on the virus checkers...;)

Thanks for all the answers. :D
But I still not been able to rule out the problem. :( Until recently my computer didn't had this problem, but now the picture freeze in the battles in StarCraft. And the Zsnes can't work smoothly, to the point of being unplayable. For some unknow reasons I've not been able to install AVG properly, and combo-fix as well as as Avast didn't found the problem. :(

It's time to reformat the hard drive and reinstall Windows and the drivers. It's the best solution.

Anyone? I'm ready for the formating. But I still don't know what to do for the licensing.

If you don't know what your keys currently are, you may find this helpful:

If your copies of software (and Windows) are genuine, you should have the product keys on their nice (expensive) sticky labels - somewhere. Personally, I always tended to lose mine. It's much nicer to not need any licences (Linux).

You can use the Sophos ( http://www.sophos.com) free trial as long as you like if you renew it once a month through their webpage.

It's pretty powerful and it's better than AVG in my opinion.

I've used AVG for YEARS without any issues at all and without a single popup or ad.

I tried Avast once, and it used up so many system resources that my computer was churning as slow as a turtle.

I strongly reccommend AVG. I've run it on 98, XP, and now it's running just fine on Windows 7.

Avast! I've found that even when they do have a false positive, they fix the glitch within hours with a new free update.

I've heard of Microsoft Security Essentials. Which yeah they came up with their own antivirus, so I don't know what's up with that. But it's free.

Shame you missed a great opportunity to install Linux

... and of course, his printer would have worked straight away. Unlike Windows, Linux can't resist providing you with access to your display.

...

One proviso, though - I was somewhat thrown, when my nice new 9500 GT booted up perfectly fine, with no need for me to tell Ubuntu even who the manufacturer was, until the full X window came up, whereupon the display (a rather ancient Apricot CRT VDU) went completely blank. It took me a while before I realised it was just that I had it plugged into the wrong one of the dual header sockets - and I guess the board didn't much like the boring display's conversation (if any).

Until recently I had Avast anti-virus, Spybot & Malwarebytes Anti-Malware installed all at the same time. All 3 were free.

The Malwarebytes free software does not come with Realtime protection, but I used it to run a scan, and it picked up a whole bunch of stuff that Avast and Spybot missed. I'd recommend it as an addition to what you've already got.

In the end I decided to ditch Avast and go and install Kaspersky, even if I did have to pay for it.

I go with a three-pronged multi-layered system. I use the antivirus avira (why has no one mentioned it???), the spybot search and destroy, and Ad-ware. I could go into the details if wanted (pm me). But there are also many other factors to a system besides virus protection that could be affecting your gameplay (go starcraft by the way). I have for several people "done over" their computers and/or laptops but sadly I cannot offer the same for you.
