I'm just curious to see how many people here have replaced a computer due to a virus or a hardware malfunction?
1st one - My mate got really angry that day and suddenly thrown the computer out the window.

"friendware malfunction"?

I have replaced two computers.

One the modem stopped working then windows stopped working and even with re-formatting the harddrive and a fresh installation of windows, it would only run in 16bit safe mode (should have run in 32 bit).

The other a laptop, it's first issue was that it was attacked by a chin chilla who pulled off a number of keys on the keyboard. Most still worked by pressing where the key would have contacted the board if the key were present. The space bar stopped working eventually (that was a major hassle), although I continued to use the internet and post here for a few months with it in that state. It must also have had virus/malwares present as well though. It got slower and slower, stopped booting reliably, starting to go into a weird "grey screen" state with the computer locked up and unresponsive to anything but using the power down button to shut off. And various kinks and quirks. So I replaced it with another one.

Now that I have reinstalled windows the old laptop probably is usable.

still on my first one but have(since june 2006) had to have it reporgrammed, on account of viruses, malware, spyware and any other infectious file there is out there a PC is subject to, practically every 6-9 mos.

This summer my system will be 5 years old and I think all it's non media internals are asus. What kind of upgrades would I need so it can run Windows7, the latest versinon of Kurzweil 3000 adn to have the power to run a super drive as well as my two drives I already have, a DVD-rom and a CD-rom/writer? I don't want to get rid of the DVD drive as I do watch movies on the computer and I don't want to get ris of the CD drive because I burn audiobooks to my machine with it and I'd like to have either to fall back on for the aforementioned functions should the superdrive fail for some unknown reason. Oh and to supprt a TVWonder chip? What kind of mods would I need to beable to conect a tape deck to my machine(for aduiobooks that still aren't available or are next to impossible to find in CD format)?

I will grant you the Leading Edge continued to function until about 2005 (that's 20 years) when it was sold, and could still be working...;)

My first was a Commodore 128, and I only switched to another one someone had given me after my spacebar quit working. Until just this past year, every computer I ever have had since was somebody else's throw-away, and I have only ever had one of those actually quit working ... and only once have I ever had a virus (non-lethal).

Yesterday I took the hard drive out of a laptop that recently stopped working and put it in the body of a laptop that died some time ago. The resultant reanimated corpse (amusingly enough, it needs electricity to start it going!) is far from perfect but functioned sufficiently well to rescue some important files.

I feel like Dr Frankenstein now. It's aliiiiiive!

Let's see I've replaced...

Vic20
Commodore64
Apple IIe
Apple IIc
Kaypro PC
Toshiba T1000 laptop
3 Compaq Desktops
1 Toshiba other laptop
1 Dell Desktop
1 Acer Travelmate laptop
That makes 12
And I still have 4 running at home and a new one on the way.

And I've replaced them all because they got just too old for the work I was doing or it was cheaper to replace then upgrade the unit.

I don't know how you can lose a machine to a virus (other than flashing the BIOS, and even that in itself can be recoverable) as it normally takes a simple format and re-install to get it back up again.

I've never "replaced" a desktop PC. I may upgrade the CPU and swap out components until I have enough parts to build another machine. I got my first laptop in 2004, and it lasted two years until it got water into it, in which case I had to replace it outright (after salvaging the hard drive). I used the replacement as my primary laptop for two years, going through several hard drive changes, some duct tape, and several soldering jobs. I still have that machine, but I "retired" it from daily use when I got another laptop (one I still use today) in 2008.
