It is a lot cheaper to use computers instead of mechanical and electromechanical devices to control anything. Even most modern typewriters are just a circuit board or two. I had to open my late '80s Brother daisy wheel typewriter up to fix it and there was one logic board and one keyboard board along with a power supply board in the case.
