Odd omen, but I was born the year of Tchernobyl's accident. Along with a few other odd and fun stuff. <.<

Well, since you mention this: has anyone read The Alchemy of Air? If so, how was it? It has been on my list of books to read for a while.

I've read it, and I highly recommend it. You might find a copy on Amazon for $5 or so.

Unfortunately I've never seen numbers for SLAM. I'll definitely give you that reactors generally are heavy, but recall SLAM's reactor was air-cooled and completely unshielded.

Aha! That means it was totally unsafe to be near.

An un-shielded reactor without a containment barrier. What if it blew up at launch? No wonder the Air Force gave up on it.

I think the fact that SLAM was, to put it gently, totally unsafe certainly helped seal its fate. Once intercontinental ballistic missiles became sufficiently accurate and reliable the Air Force presumably concluded that there was no longer any reason to tolerate such risks.

I did, interesting but kind of thin in places.

the reason we don't have the atomic airplane is that Conservatives don't want to pay for research and developement so it's cheaper to be a naysayer.

A nuclear powered aircraft is inherently unsafe. It is also inefficient. It would have to be shielded which would reduce its power to weight ratio significantly. The idea is a loser. The only place where nuclear propulsion for flying objects can be used safely is in outer space. The only safe nuclear propelled vehicles are ships and submarines.

You do know what nuclear reactors, and all the shielding surrounding them weigh? And in the event of an accident do you intend to evacuate a city?

More possible is to use nuclear power in manufacture of synthetic aviation fuel Nuclear reactors work on submarines and ships because they don't have to support themselves through lift generated by airflow over a wing.

The military is presently trying to develop a nuclear powered drone aircraft. It will use quantum nucleonic batteries.

But they'll give you a lot of bad gas, and you gotta peel them first.

I have a huge obsession with chernobyl. I've spent hours looking through photos of pripyat on the web. I would love to visit, but I read that recently the tours have been stopped until it us investigated where all the money from the tours is going.

I read that the sarcophogus is getting old, but Ukraine are having problems raising money to complete the new one. The wirld seems to have forgotten chernobyl, but we will have to deal with the effects for generations.

I lived in Britain at the time of the accident and it freaks me out that radiation travelled that far. Only this year were bans lifted on the sale of livestock from affected areas of britain.

Granted, this was a unique accident due to the bad design and the power of the explosion which sent radioactive particles up so high that they travelled so widely accross europe, but I watched a swdish documentary recently on underground bunkers they are building to contain radioactive waste from spent fuel rods.

It really made me think about how our generating fuel via nuclear means is going to have an impact on future generations.

For hundreds of years to come future generations will be dealing with iur nuclear waste.
