This would probably be a good idea.
A lot of basic help desk or repair shop jobs will value this over a comparable nothing.
If he's been in the computer field for a few months at least he could probably take the test cold and pass it.
I have one from 2004 and recently took the new revision in 2011. It's gotten a LOT easier, with questions like "what is the most popular external storage interface for a PC". You used to have to know crap like bus speeds and serial port addresses, etc.
Not sure what kind of market you live in, most of the PC shops around my area usually have help wanted signs posted. It could be worth asking them even if they don't.
