They're both the same thing these days. The only advantage that you get with a Mac is osX, which is Unix. --I run linux on an industrial grade laptop, which will at some point be upgraded with a MilSpec laptop. So the advantage of running Unix is moot.

The disadvantages of running a Mac are these. Flimsy build quality and low battery life, (compared to what I'm using) Limited upgrade options, (ever try to upgrade the Hard drive on a MacBook???) proprietary interconnects instead of OTS replacements, and they will not stand up in a harsh environment.

I ran OSX and Ubuntu concurrently on this HDD once. I ended up resorting to VMWare as I just got sick of rebooting my MacBook all the time.

I'm a PC person. I'm a computer gamer. I can upgrade my hardware for the same amount as the PS4 and Xbox One combined. I have Windows installed on one hard drive and my preferred Linux distro on another.

PC

I use Outlook for calendar and contacts and it synchs with my Blackberry.
Word is the best word processing program out there and I haven't seen anything Mac has that can hold a candle to it.
Excel wins hands-down as far as database.

I quite don't see the competition, unless you are involved in graphics. Then I'd have to say Mac, because most graphic artists use Macs.

It's an Air and I keep telling everyone it's like driving a rolls royce. they are very good at making you feel like that, I have to say. Problem is (I discussed this in another thread), i can't put MS Access on it and I'm in the middle of an Access project. i know, I know i can go nuts with all that crazy extra stuff to run windows programs, but unless it's seriously simple and devoid of complications I'm not going to.

I am really profoundly shocked at how few windows programs there are for Mac. The other major pain for me is OneNote. SO I thought, well I can adapt, i'll force myself to use Evernote, but the transfer process takes forever and it just lumps everything together in one noebook. And then I have to deal with itunes over media monkey. i really may have to take it back, have a few more days. but as you can see the keys on my current computer skip, so i want to keep a my AIr. The screen is stunning and I didn't get the whatever they call screen upgrrade.

Most software developers have little incentive to develop for OSX, and MS has even less than they do.

Supposedly Crossover runs Access for Windows reasonably. This may be somewhat better than resorting to VMWare, which doesn't do a perfect job of integrating Windows programs into the Mac environment.

I would likely just install Windows 7 on the Air and blow OSX away completely. Neither OS is remarkably superior to the other.

Outlook for Mac isn't that bad.

Word for Mac isn't that bad.

Excel is a spreadsheet, not a database.

You might want to consider trading in your Blackberry.

Macs only have flimsy build quality when compared to a Toughbook or something.

UNIX architecture no longer offers a performance incentive over Windows, except for niche cases.

I'll chime in here.

I'm using a spring 2013 MacBook Pro with Retina display. I bought it specifically because of the display, which no other laptop can compete with, and thought I would eventually just blow away OSX and put Windows 7 on it. However, my muscle memory has started becoming flexible enough to deal with the Mac's unusual key combinations, and I have no need to run any software that is not available for it. So I kept it, and s**t is fine.

That's my story.

Yes you are correct about the spreadsheet/database error. I sometimes get them confused. Sometimes I use Excel like a database.
Sounds to me like you are a Mac user.
I cannot get myself to want an iPhone. I hate nebulous typing. I like real, hard, alphanumeric keys to manipulate with my fingertips which is why I have a Curve, not a touchscreen phone. Similarly I also need to read real tangible books, not these ridiculous nebulous eBooks.
So people think I'm out of date without an iPhone. I do have an iPad, and that I use for when I only need internet access on the go, and even that frustrates me to type on. My husband cannot convince me no matter how much he tries to ridicule me and play Mr. Superior about it. I won't budge on the issue, no matter how much peer pressure he tries to exert on me.

Sure.

Blackberry as a company is failing though, there will not be any new phones.

I use a bunch of OSes. I do not care about "Windows vs. Mac OS"; if anything I think there are quirks to Mac OS that are stupid and unnecessary, and I think Windows 8 is basically running a tablet OS on a PC which makes little sense either. At least they're both fast.

I actually have a Mac laptop AND a Samsung laptop. I prefer the Samsung simply because I can modify and customize my options much easier on it. I can run all my programs on it. I can play MPEGs on it and not run into problems with MOV format. Mac is better for the kids because they can't screw much up on it if they press the wrong button.

PC. Never had much use for Apple products. I'm running Windows 7 Professional and have several virtual machines loaded with Linux distros for specific tasks and experimentation. I hear the multimedia suite on Apple computers is pretty good but not really something I need. I also prefer to have a machine that I can upgrade all of the hardware simply

<--- Toughbook User. As far as the performance incentive is concerned, This is entirely dependant on the DE that you use with UNIX. If you run KDE, Gnome Shell, or Unity with all the eye candy turned on, yeah, your system rescources will run about as high as Windows. OTOH, if you use a lightweight DE like LXDE, XFCE, or even Razor-qt or simply just a WM like on of the 'boxes, your system rescources will decrease immensely.

I don't think Windows as an OS uses enough resources to be of any concern to me. This is particularly true of Windows 8. The last time I owned a computer that I felt was running slowly was years ago, and I'm not a person with patience.
