I seriously doubt that the NSA has time to sit around spying on every person who owns a computer. With the enormous amount of embedded firmware in modern computers, I suppose it's possible, but they probably only target people who are suspicious and worth spying on. I don't mind them having the ability as long as it's being used for good purposes like thwarting terrorists.

No, they definitely are not. First, it's way to hard to do, as there are too many security features. Second, it's just not worth the effort as it provides too much absolute information with too little usable information.
