Monthly sales over time by brand. This chart indicates they were a niche (ie writers, a small number of remote workers, etc.) & hobbyist market until the Win 95 / dot-com era, circa 1995:

Notable events for 1989:
Tim Berners-Lee submits a proposal for a distributed information/communication system at CERN (basis for the much later World Wide Web)
First ISP "The World" begins operations.
Microsoft Office, CorelDraw & Sybase SQL Server introduced.
SCO Unix released.
S3, Tyan, Plexor, KingMax, Iwill, ASUS & Abit founded (notice these "big names" of the era are/were hardware manufacturers)
OSPF network protocol introduced (key to efficient routing of network traffic)

Notable events for 1995 (note the very different flavor and scope):
Windows NT 3.51 introduced (it was a big deal for IT depts)
Yahoo!, WebTV, Hotmail, AltaVista, Amazon and Ebay were first brought online.
Netscape went public and introduced the world to crazy-value IPO's; the dot-com era begins.
Internet Explorer 1.0 introduced. 2.0 was introduced later in the year & the Browser Wars with Netscape began.
DirectX 1.0 was introduced, ushering in the era of viable Windows games
HTML 2, USB, SSL & .mp3 standards introduced
"Linux" trademark granted to Linus Torvalds (OS was 4 years old)

I can read much more text and and faster on a desktop. The games on desktops are so much better So far iam unimpressed with smartphones and tablets. My guess is alot have a desktops and tablets and smartphones. So not death but one of many ways to have a computer.

Productivity on a tablet or phone is like having one or both hands tied behind your back versus using a desktop with a keyboard and mouse. I will always have a PC. I like my desktops for productivity, and my smart phone for mobile use. I haven't found much use for a tablet other than playing app style games. A laptop, isn't very useful for me because I don't go to school. I haven't needed to upgrade my PC I built in late 2011 as its still more powerful than most PCs on the market, I just need to update the video card again which I have once already.

I think tablets and PCs will eventually merge. We are already seeing some of that: PCs with the portability of a tablet, the power and adaptability of a PC or close to it, and a keyboard you can fold away. In my work of 3D modelling, we might have a desktop for serious computing or overnight crunching of data, and a smaller tablet-like laptop for mobile learning and sharing of media that's still capable of most processing needs.

Unless dramatically new and diverse technology is developed to replace it, PC isn't going anywhere.
