I can get a local company to bulid my computer and provide a guarantee for cheap (in fact this is what my brother done and got a better cheaper computer with a warranty than my parents brand name one though his is newer so i have to take into account that parts get cheaper all the time but still.....) but obviously then i need to do research on them to make sure they keep their promises and there is always the problem of smaller companies being more likely to go out of business though i know of at least one that has been around for years with a good reputation.

Dell though manages to keep costs down by doing all their selling directly, not in shops (in Britain at least) and selling in bulk with warranties. In fact i havent seen anyone just have a Dell as a home computer, it has always been people with organisations with multiple computers. They get good deals by buying them in bulk. I have heard complaints though of them breaking down too frequently and have heard they use cheap parts but Dell fix them quite quickly (if you buy a guarantee as most companies do) and if they cant they replace them until they are fixed so they are naturally very popular with businesses given their flexibility.

The machine I'm on now is dell.

It's four years old, a gift from one of the companies I worked for,

Dell is definitely a corporate brand of computer. There installed at both of my jobs.

The local UW in my hometown also uses them exclusively now. If you see one Dell, your gonna see many Dells.

Has been for a while now. That's what makes Dell support legendary. HP does the same thing, but their reps are actually intelligble.
