Video cards are pretty much permanent equipment in any laptops I've had. There may be exceptions that I'm unaware of.

I own a more than 10 year old IBM-thinkpad and it works fine. However I heard that after Lenovo took over this is an exception.

Dell Latitude series, IBM/Lenovo ThinkPads, Fujitsu Lifebooks, anything Apple.

Avoid HP or Toshiba's consumer stuff like the plague.

They're still good laptops. Corporate America depends on the ThinkPad or Latitude.

The german computer magazine c't said that in case of defects, you sometimes have to wait quite a long time for repairs.

Get a Macbook, or Macbook Air.

Now I know that Macs are excellent (because my brother has a MacBook Pro) and do their jobs really well, but they're just overpriced. Why spend £1500 on an Apple laptop when you can get a similar (or even higher) spec for half the price?

The MacBook Air is a rip-off. £2000 for a laptop with only 64GB solid state memory? It doesn't even have a great graphics card (is it Intel XM1300?) and only has one USB port.

I do actually own a PowerBook G4 (Given to me last year by a youth marketing group I worked for for a while) but it is very slow to today's standards and it could not fulfill my needs of an ideal desktop.

I think I'll stick with a Dell XPS M1530, because I looked at one in a shop and the build quality is brilliant; and the specs can easily be configured online for a great price.

They shipped my Lenovo X61 today, 3 weeks earlier than the estimated shipping date. Like. ZOMG!

I dispute the comment about Toshiba products. I'm currently using one right now, and I've been happy with it since I got it. HP, OTOH, was once known for making solid products, however they've not been that good in the past few years.

A few people here have suggested that you get a Mac. They're expensive, and when I had one, I found it very difficult to work on due to my lacking the special Torx driver that you need to pull the case apart. --I couldn't even install a larger hard drive on it.

GET A MACBOOK PRO! It's got a Core 2 Duo with 2GB of RAM. And plus, it comes with Leopard, the most advanced OS out there. And if you really do need to stick with Windoze for some reason (I don't see why not), you can always install it on the computer - something you can't do in reverse! (a.k.a. you can't install OS X on a PC (legally).) Plus, they now have Penryn processors inside (small performance boost, BIG heat reduction) and the multitouch trackpad that the MacBook Air has. And you can even install Linux if you want to :p

I challenge you to make a thread about this so I can reply to you without hijacking this one!

I have a Dell laptop that is 6 years old and still runs great! I can't play any new games on it anymore, but it's great for using the internet (I'm typing on it right now). We've never needed any repairs for it either.

BTW Macbook Air is a total piece of overhyped crap. They really went for form over function with it, so it's basically eye candy with no use. I heard LG made a similar laptop that works a lot better. I think the iPhone was a rip-off of an LG product as well, so IMO go for LG, not the copy.

funny, Toshibas to me are flimsy machines, and sales reps at Fry's tell me they have a pretty high return rate.

IMO, there isn't much of a difference between a MB and a MBP - except for Nvidia 8600GT vs. Intel GMA X3100 graphics, LED vs. CCFL screen backlighting, aluminum vs. Lexan housing and a backlit keyboard

Verizon and LG have the Voyager, but the Voyager is one flaming bar of ish.
