I use AVG on my Vista partition.

Mostly I find that Mac OS X is the best anti-virus, though

Hi guys,

I have just downloaded a free program I never heard of called Comodo.

Apparently PC World loves it.

The magazine, I guess. I wonder why they would recommend Comodo?

That would be all the other four free programs on the list, other than Clamwin and Avast!.

I hardly feel that "being nagware" is a very good way to decide between AV programs.

(Interesting - ".gr" is the Greenland ccTLD)

It would appear that Comodo is rather poor (catching only 43.15% of threats), so there's a distinct possibility you will not be letting us know how it went, until you have recovered from the infection you get from the next but one virus that finds your machine.

ClamWin is only slightly better (54.68%). (I use ClamAV under Linux, to filter Windows viruses out of emails.)

I always used to use AVG (94.85%), but have switched to Avast! (93.78%), which seems to have been a bit of a mistake, particularly as I don't like it all that much. E.g. I hate it animating its icon in my tray.

Maybe I'll ditch that and try the last of the three major free AVs: Avira (AntiVir) (97.13%).

AVG free is the best anti virus I have ever used and it's free. It never nags me. I don't even notice it's there 99% of the time, which I can't say for the ones I used to pay for.

And as far as I can tell it does catch things. It's caught multiple viruses since I've had it.

The only free one I know of is AVG.

I was using Norton, but it got so bloated it bogged down my system, so I switched to the ZoneAlarm Security Suite. That one worked fine for a while, then the newest version started casusing problems. It interfered with other software on my system, including the MS Office suite and OpenOffice. I would try to bring up a page of blank mailing labels and the system would hang for several minutes.

I got rid of it and switched to Webroot's security suite, which comes with Antivirus, firewall, and antispyware, and it works well and is barely noticable. One thing I like about it is it can block some of the ad sites, so I don't see those annoying ads or get cookies from the ad vendors thrown at me all the time. Nice little feature to have I wish the Linux side of my system had.

AVG & Zonealarm are a mighty good mix. Add Ad-Aware and Spybot and your guarded like Fort Knox. [Well almost, If you would pay for AV or your ISP provides your AV I'll go with Symantec.]

Yup I done the same on my old PC.

Symantec sucks, though.

I use the pro version of AVG (you can get it free through TrialPay) and ThreatFire. They don't conflict. AVG uses a signature database and ThreatFire looks for certain activity patterns.
For a firewall, I use Comodo.
I also use RootKitRevealer sometimes, but AVG has a rootkit scanner as well.

AVG, Zonealarm for free, Norton AV '09 & Zonealarm Pro if you want to pay.

I would also add on Ad-Aware, Windows Defender & Spybot. All free downloads.

Oh CCleaner to clean out all the junk.

Hi all,

If you check wikipedia, you'll see both avg and avast are now registerware/adware even if they weren't before.

I'm guessing if you have versions of those programs and aren't getting hassled, you've been grandfathered in.

also, given that even the paid antivirus programs can't keep up these days, my motivation for forking out is even lower than it used to be.

as I say, I'll keep you up to date on the comodo experience.

Pretty much all anti virus software, free or not, is nagware.

"Your life will end if you don't turn on this security feature!" sort of thing.

The only “dangerous" thing that could happen with a computer, short of it catching on fire and burning you house down, is having you personal information stolen. Loss of data is a pain but not that bad.

It is also not great is you computer is part of a bot net. But in many cases antivirus programs completely failt to pick up these sort of threats.

Yeah, I have been reading about how the programs can't keep up with the malware. That is part of the reason I don't really feel like paying through the nose for one.

So far Comodo has not annoyed me.

Avast nagware? How is it nagware if it doesn't force/pressure me to pay for the business version? Also to be quite honest you could have put that on Wikipedia. Avast is a great scanner.

Depending on what personal information is on there, this could be a major problem. I tend not to keep too much personal information on my computer, and especially not to put it over the internet, but I think I'm safer for using *nix-based systems that are more secure.

Well, I didn't. 8)

I take your point, however, in that it might not be true.

However, I'm tired of installing things that then tell me my computer has 138 infections and it won't fix them unless I pay. Comodo hasn't done that yet.
