seeking pc coach - anyone interested
You've got a lot of options.
Technically, going from Vista to XP is considered a 'downgrade'. MS is extending support for XP for about another 3 months, so if you change Operating systems, don't wait too long.
It's possible to turn off a lot of the features in Vista, so that you don't have an 'electronic nanny'. Vista has not been popularly accepted by the world at large...
As for your text ideas, what it sounds like you might look into is Adobe products; Acrobat Distiller, maybe Photoshop (if you want to do work with graphics), and (dangit-brain fa*t.. Pagemaker?. Check the Adobe site for info.
You can have dual-boot systems, I'm not up on Ubuntu (too many other irons in the fire... so you could have both Ubuntu and XP, with a boot manager program to allow you to use both. There are a lot of open source programs out there that have Linux versions, but with both, you've got more options. Still, check out 'open source' places like Nonags, Sourceforge, etc., for free software. Nothing paid for, nothing lost...

very much my line of thinking, i'd like to get interested enough in all this to just about be able to become more or less indepent-ish on Linux (so that would mean Ubuntu, though other offers are under consideration)
Seb:
i am still looking for the dictionary & grammar to aid me in coming to grips with your second post;
as to the first - which i found as readable as likeable
yes, still in the market and looks like things will turn out as suggested:
- present Vistaed laptop to niece Nina (who might become an interested party to our party)
- soon new XPed laptop to uncle Robert,
* to be adapted according to personal preferences, and daunting challenges by coach
- dual booted indeed (don't even want to run the risk of doing without WIN totally)

One thing that will be good for me to know, is whether there are any considerations as to the order in which things should be processed: remember, we have a brand new thingy unaffected by real virtual life; is it wise to take some measures FIRST of all, upon acquiring said object of frustrated desires...
Is there anything you want me to organize with the delivering shop, who will be installing XP anyway?
Any other wishes in preparation?
I WILL be getting back as soon as I have details concering actual delivery...
Au rêvoir a tou(te)s,
thanks specifically the solemn king & seb
for willingness to more than mere advise
(all of which remaining more than welllcommme)
Robert

XP yeah, but if you wait until after July 1st before buying a new computer that comes with Vista, you should be entitled to a free upgrade to Windows 7: http://www.linuxtoday.com/infrastructur ... 3135NWDTMS
The next Windows will be out later this year. XP is on the verge of not being supported by Microsoft any more.
A 64bit processor with at least 4GB RAM, but ideally 8GB RAM, would be a good idea. If your going to have the next Windows, you might want a touch screen, so you can take advantage of its touch screen support. Before buying the computer make sure that the hardware is compatible with Ubuntu.
They could pre-install Ubuntu for you, but that's easy enough for you to do yourself, once you have a CD.
You can make your own CD, or order official CD's, but that can take six weeks, however it will probably be much easier for you to order free official CD's: https://shipit.ubuntu.com/
Don't worry about my second post that was a reply to gamefreak.
