It's such a pain, and happens more in Windows than Linux - but if you have patience, it usually works out for the best.
Since we expect computers to work so quickly, we get used to the speed - then they slow down, but we don't.

I used to love watching people wait for the microwave to finish. I remember heating the oven, then putting in the meal, then letting it cook for 30 to 45 minutes and then having lunch. I watch them dance around and curse because it took 4.5 minutes from a frozen chunk to lunch.

The owner of this site asks for donations and gets them, but it's not clear what he/she spends the money on.

at the top of every page, just below the WrongPlanet.net banner is RSS Forums and under that is Support Wrong Planet Awareness. when you double click on it it states:

Quote:
If you donate at least $15 you will get a WrongPlanet supporter tag:
PM Alex after donating to request your tag.

The WrongPlanet Supporters program is a new opportunity for you to financially support the development of the WrongPlanet.net website. Maintaining a quickly growing website such as WrongPlanet is very expensive and extremely time consuming. Recently, the community has been growing at a rate that makes it even more expensive to maintain the site. Your donation will help to offset these costs and compensate the creator for his time spent making WrongPlanet.net such a great place to visit. Donations are not tax deductible but are greatly appreciated.

Our current hosting costs exceed $280/month!

Send donations as checks made out to:

Wrong Planet
And mail them to:

If you don't want to send a check, you may use paypal.

and since we are still up and running, people are still paying in. The Google adds have really bottomed out in the recent economic crunch, though, so it is difficult to know how long we can continue to stay online. All the moderators and Admins are volunteers and uncompensated.

I believe during the economic crunch. The owner of this site, shouldn't be asking for donations, unless people are told what this money is spent on? People cannot afford to donate money during this economic crunch, if they don't know what their money is being spent on. Where is this money going that people, like me are donating?

I don't know how much plainer it can be. The server takes up lab space that is rented, the internet connection has a monthly fee. How is this paid for unless the members support the site? If it is not paid for, the site dissapears, it is that simple. We have been lucky so far.

It is just a sense of responsibility to the community.

Well, from a thread earlier about date stamp, and what time zone the servers are, it appears to be in a sliver of Japan, or Australia. Here's how to check the general internet traffic worldwide (well, one of a zillion sites, I'm sure...;)

http://www.internettrafficreport.com

if you want to see what Wrongplanet's working on, try this

http://toolbar.netcraft.com/site_report ... planet.net

now that's interesting; it says it's in the US. Someone forget to set the clock?...;)

looks to be about 10 servers, scattered across several states (all running Linux, some Apache...good for them...;)

I haven't seen it lock up, but every once in awhile (usually Saturday night), it will 'flake out' to a video of a conference of aspies somewhere...;)

thank you for the link to the site report. The server is in Allentown and we are set up through 'godaddy.com' that has anchor advertising every year in the Super Bowl broadcast. It reminds me how this site has lasted and grown.

WP will be five years old this coming June 14.

GustavHolst, are you asking for receipts for donations?. WP is likely not an official charity or non profit organization. Sole proprietorships are not required to divulge expenditures to anyone but the tax man. Probably the best you can expect is your record of transaction from paypal.

I have money transfering in paypal. Thanks for reminding me to donate.

Likewise, in times like these, its even more important to donate. 5 bucks out of my pocket is a lot less hardship than 280 out of Alex' bank account. Its fair to assume that hardship affects us all equally, so there is no practical difference between donating during lean times and prosperous ones.

Need and responsibility remain equivalent.
