in elementary school i hacked the security of the macs that they had. they found out, had to reformat the drive and reload. the librarian, who was very arrogant when it came to computers thought the security software was perfect, and thought i had been told the password. in reality, i just guessed it.

all i wanted was to change the wallpaper!

I accidentally locked people out of the library computer at my grade school. I don't think it had a password, though, at least not until I set one. ;3

I'm taking some sparse courses in hacking, port scanning, injection and stuff at my university. I'm considering studying ethical hacking and offensive security later, though if I get too much into making programs, that could be a threat. Software architecture is a lot lighter on my eyes and mind than all the Linux based stuff (read: writing lines in the terminal without knowing what they mean), but I'll have to learn that anyway, so I guess it's just a temporary burden. Oh yeah, and with hacking wifi the hardware is a jungle to navigate.
Hmm. Algorithms and programming competitions might be a serious threat to my future as well. XD

I'm aware that certain old people are very unhappy with the media deciding cracking is called hacking. They should take a look at even older people complaining about all the other parts of language that changed over time and realize how old they are. Then take a look at themselves. It's sad sometimes when meaning change, but being stuck up about definitions doesn't make one any more understandable to outsiders.

Two for one.

The meanings haven't changed at all - two words have been swapped due to laziness. Nothing to do with word evolution whatever.

I can't hack hacking. Cracking cracks my brain. I don't even know how to turn on a Mac.

Looking to learn more about computers, if you guys could drop me a couple lines on where to get info on the subject online , that'd be great.

Also if anyone's looking to teach I'll be your paduwan :)

I got caught cracking/ hacking years ago. It was nothing malicious, I was just looking for information. It traumatised me so much that I felt unable to do anything with computers for a long time.

I don't hack or crack, but I do dig persistently enough to get to things (like images that can't be downloaded normally with a right-click).

I probably would have learned to hack if I had higher intelligence and more of an interest in programming.

No such thing as a hacker. Anyone who calls themselves one is probably a idiot.

(I am now going to get hacked..)

But honestly, people keep saying they are hackers but it seems like a term out of the 1980s/90s. Many of them don't even know how to connect their computer to the internet. But its like having a guy who thinks he's a great mechanic, he'll open your car's hood then mess it up.

Years ago I read this white paper that claimed there was a direct link between aspergers and (blackhat) hacking. Can't seem to find it.

When you think about it's not that hard to see. Not only does hacking usually involve pouring over sourcecode and binary dumps for days on end without so much as a segfault. Even if you do find something and succesfully exploit it, what's the point really? You're not exactly doing the world a favor. Only a person who was doing it just because they like the activity of looking for it would keep at it for there to be succes (especially nowadays when every sh***y piece of software has whole teams of researchers taking it to pieces so they can be the first to launch a press statement on how insecure it is).

Most little kids call themselves hackers now a days! Why would someone want to make it known that they are a hacker on a public forum anyway? That's beyond me!

Secondly, these "Hackers" just use a live backtrack CD and claim hackerdom. IMO, the real hackers are the silent ones. They are the ones that find buffer overflows and write exploits for them. That can program!

This hacking crap is just a trend amongst little kids.

To answer your question though, I gave it a try just to see what all the buzz was about. Its fine if your into that kind of thing but its not for me. I enjoy programming instead! Especially GUI programming! Its my favorite. I also enjoy hacking the Linux system. As in learning about the stuff under the hood, the kernel, init, etc.
