I'm not sure if that is such a bad thing. Wine runs a fraction of the Windows software out there, and a lot of it that does run, runs with glitches that drive you absolutely nuts. Cedega is a joke. It's easier to either stick with Windows or switch to Linux and Linux apps. Or, do the smart thing and get a Mac :P

All my main machines (coolblue, lappy, server) run Ubuntu, first two actually running Kubuntu to be exact (KDE much better than GNOME :D ), the dining room computer doesn't but I have been contimplating putting it on there but haven't had the time, inclination, or real need

I am very happy with Linux since I first used it, will never go back to windows as main OS :D

I like to know because I  linux.

I'd like to use Linux but there's no driver I can find for my ATI card. Knoppix won't display at the res I like.

Freespire has ATI and Nvidia drivers pre installed. You can download freespire at http://www.freespire.org

I stopped using Linux recently when mplayer refused to play DTS audio track fast enough. On Windows XP, it plays DTS fine. I use -vo directx on Windows and used -vo xv on Linux. Not sure if it's one of the things that caused that problem.

i am currently using Linux Mint 5 Elyssa but in the past i have used fedora, SUSE Linux, Debian and knoppix and i have to say the usability of the OSes has improved EXPONENTIALLY since i last experimented with them

PS: Linux mint is based on ubuntu and i like it very much that u don't really need the CLI to install stuff! Linux Mint FTW!! !! !! !!

I'm using Ubuntu 8.04, Ubuntu 8.10 Alpha, Debian Etch.

Ubuntu 8.04 here. Etch is the Debian testing, right? I was thinking of trying out Lenny. WHat have you found to be the differences between Ubuntu and Debian? Ubuntu is Debian-based, so obviously they would be fairly similar.

Very. Debian can be installed from the very first iso(it forms a liveCD). Then there are other ISOs which just contain more software. It would allow for faster downloads or on disconnected machines, sparing access to the repositories. They seem to be assembled like kits. I should download one and try it out. I really only did the first to see what the differences where in the base system.

So... what did you find the differences to be? Pros and cons?

Ha, I just got a friend of mine on Ubuntu. He got his new Dell and Vista was pretty much sucking in various ways, so I directed him to the download site and he's running Ubuntu as of about an hour ago.

Way to go on getting the friend on Ubuntu. I take it hes not a gamer? Did he dual boot?

I dont see anything but minor cosmetic differences. The menus are a little different, and some of the buttons such as shut down have different graphics.

Hm, all right then. I'll just stick with Ubuntu for now if there aren't any major differences. My neighbor is insisting I should use Arch, but I don't have that much spare time.

Yeah, I think he dual booted. He just got his comp this week, and nothing was working properly, at one point the OS wouldn't even load, it kept getting slower, etc. He actually had to defrag it today. :P But Ubuntu seems to be working out of the box for him, though there's no wifi in his dorm so no telling if that works yet.

And my roomie tried to borrow my printer (using USB connector) and though his XP laptop auto-detected the printer, it wasn't able to figure out how to get the drivers. Ubuntu? Didn't even have to go through any configuration stuff to tell it to get the drivers. Plug in the USB cable and print, simple as that.

What is this when Linux is more user-friendly than Windows? Watch out Microsoft!
