Someone once told me that it was Chernobyl and other incidents that led the the demise of further expansion of nuclear power in the US. This can't be true because the halting of nuclear expansion predates all of these incidents including the Three Mile Island incident of 1979.

There are indications that the "Soccer Moms" and their gas powered minivans aren't to blame for the disuse of nuclear power, rising CO2 levels (well maybe a little) and wars over oil which may have been a consequence of our continued dependence on fossil fuels. The anti-nuclear protesters were at least acting with good intentions at the time, but the real reason for the halting of additional nuclear construction had to do with legal pressure from coal. The NRC was intended to promote nuclear safety and protect the public, but it became used as a tool by the coal industry to defeat additional nuclear construction.

I have a huge obsession with chernobyl. I've spent hours looking through photos of pripyat on the web. I would love to visit, but I read that recently the tours have been stopped until it us investigated where all the money from the tours is going.

Is that why? I thought it was a safety issue. Buildings collapsing and whatnot.

Ah well. Guess I'll just start another game of STALKER.
