Heh, I can appreciate the boast, a little interesting to have a mathematician who talks like Muhammad Ali.
Anyway, Mental Math can be learned, Arthur Benjamin is one to follow. I think it suggests that the subconscious mechanism for mathematics is combinatoric and/or synesthetic in nature. He discusses combinatorics, hearing the answer and visualizing the process.
I had a lot of difficulty in school, showing my work or believing that the method shown was the only proper way of doing things. Virtually all of Arthur Benjamin's lessons jive with my take on elementary maths.
