Just scored a nice video card upgrade too. A Radeon 4870 video card... a couple generations old but mid-to-high end. Performs extremely well for the lousy $20 I paid for it! :D

And $40 for the sexy Antec case w/ 620W Corsiar modular power supply... gad I love wheelin' & dealin'! :D

^^^ Not bad at all, but the video card was a waste of money, the i5's internal video is just as fast as the card you put in!

then again why not free up the i5's internal gfx and use the flops for something else, (they are essentially cuda enabled computational cores, they do help when doing general calculation)

Whether you use the graphics core of the i5 or not, the computational power remains 100% identical.

You're right about gaining a tiny bit of CUDA performance from adding the video card... not many CUDA cores in that low-end card though.

....and I've had to sell off the nifty machines I had - sold off at profit to pay the bills when someone fell through on paying me what they owed. :x

I downgraded to a cheap Dell Dimension 9200 which I've upgraded with spare/cheap parts to a Core2Quad 2.4 w/ 6GB DDR2 and a couple 500GB drives. I have a 64GB SSD lying around that I'm deciding if I want to keep in the laptop (instead of a 500GB lappy drive) or move to the desktop.

Oh well... it's no spanky 1155 machine, but with a video card upgrade to a fanless Radeon 7750, it's totally silent but plays Skyrim at max detail. I guess it'll do. ;)
Finding a cheap Q6600 was a real boon... it was only a Core2Duo E6600 before that.

That's a sexy pc. Be careful about that SSD though. They are prone to breaking easily. How much did that cost you?

I got a new computer recently which supposedly has great specs, but I'm really disappointed by how it runs. It overheats all the time if I don't keep the cooling pad on constantly and for all the processing power, it runs a lot of things discouragingly slowly. The physical design of the computer is also really frustrating. Only 3 USB ports, all on one side. Power plug in the back so I can't push it against a wall. Trackpad doesn't work properly and Dell isn't doing anything about it. Wifi doesn't work properly and I have to be plugged in to the router to get any decent internet connection. "Chrome" siding around the edge is painted plastic which is simply glued on - I've had it a few months and it's already fading to brown and coming off in some places. I bought it for video work and live VJing, so I'm pretty frustrated. I guess the conclusion is, don't ever buy a Dell.

However, the specs should be fairly impressive, I think:
Intel Core i7-2640M CPU @ 2.80 GHz
8 GB RAM
NVIDIA Geforce GT 525M - 2GB
500 GB HDD
256 GB SSD

Can't find the full list of specs, hope that's enough to give an idea anyway.

what games do you play on that computer?

FPS, RPG, RTS, TBS (can't wait for the release of X-Com). Basically, anything I like. I also play classics like BG(1/2/ToB) and PS:T on my current computer. But my entire point of coughing up so much money for a PC is that I can buy *any* game and then max out settings without having to worry about performance.

I *literally* got dizzy, by the way, the first times I played both Battlefield 3 and Borderlands 2 at 120 Hz. This makes a massive difference compared to my previous 60 Hz monitor. Might be a priority if one likes first person shooters...

I'm not a gamer, so I don't need much. I currently have a $295 HP 2000 laptop I bought at Wal Mart when I fried the motherboard on my netbook (it caught fire due to a faulty AC jack, just like the computer before it). As to specs, it has an Intel Celeron T3500 CPU, 3GB of ram, 64 bit Windows 7 Home Premium, and a 320 GB hard drive. The screen is 15.5 in and that's about it. I see my computers as disposable commodities. I maintain them as best I can, clean the dust out regularly, run a very locked down Firefox browser, etc. but eventually they get replaced when they are falling apart. Usually, this takes 2-3 years.
