Cognitive science could maybe answer this question one day.

I think mathematics is a cognitive invention of the human mind and this can be studied in areas such as cognitive science, cognitive psychology, cognitive neuroscience and formal languages theory because mathematics is also a formal language and in cultural anthropology.

People create things so to me it seems that the Myans and other cultures helped create what is Mathematics. After all it was the muslims that created algebra.
