I am trying to build a computer on a budget of $550, and I can get decent hardware for this. I already have all my games purchased on steam, but last I checked wine under Ubuntu would not run half of my games. I was wondering how much wine had improved in the last year or so. Also is there anywhere in the US i could get a used LCD cheaply?

Not too bad. Was just playing Bejewled 2 on Wine with Full Frame-Rate. However fore more heavy-duty games you will still need Windows, {Don't do much PC Gaming. More of a Nintendio Fan.)

It really depends on the game... Copy protection is pretty much a no-go on wine. I don't personally know how well wine handles steam, but I'd bet that it's not good. Haven't played games on linux in a while, so ymmv. Cedega, on the other hand, played quite a few games with copy protection. But it's not free, and it won't run as well as windows native.

Dont count on running any direct X 10 games in wine.

The sims 3 runs fairly well for me, though it saves slowly for some reason, and i get the occasional graphical glitch.

Have a look near the bottom here https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Games . A lot of games might run natively.

Thanks, not sure if I should use linux, does anyone know how a 2.8 ghz dual core and a Radeon 3870 would perform at gaming? If I can make these downgrades I can afford windoze vista home premium 64 bit

The 2.8 ghz will be great. That radeon is an x3870, right? If so, it will be great too. New card? Great. Ancient card? No support for linux from ATI.

2.8GHz... ? I see one problem with that... Which processor? AMD or Intel? I prefer the GeForce series of cards as they are easier to follow....

much better provided your video card is decently supported, which pretty much means nvidia or HD Radeon. Possibly intel if they can get their driver performance back on track as good or better than before with the new-ish GEM and UXA acceleration mode, intel has slightly dropped the ball as of late on their linux support.

But assuming you have a well supported video card, WINE is alot better at games today than it was just 1 year ago but still bad in general. For most games up until very recent you should be fine. I would hold onto a windows install however if your an avid gamer.

Some possible hope is virtualbox now has directx and opengl support for windows guests, maybe we can get more compatibility with this.

AMD and ATI, both have a better ratio of performance to price
