I met up with a fellow aspie the other day, and his mum decided that we would look in the charity shop. It's not the sort of place I usually go, because I have no interest whatsoever in old clothes and junk. However out of the corner of my eye, I saw a little MP3 Player sitting in the corner, in a rather tatty looking box.
Inside, was an iRiver H10 5GB, one of those ones that can have Rockbox installed on it. It was in okish condition, however it was only the player and the box. In the end I did buy it, and I ordered a cable off of the net. Once I had charged it for the first time, I looked at the awful standard firmware. I then installed rockbox, and there was an immediate difference.
What I wanted to know is how many of you have put alternate firmware on your devices, and your thoughts on both the original and the new firmware.
Oh, BTW when said alternate firmware, I meant non-official ones like Rockbox or IpodLinux.

I have an archos. Sooner or later I will take a stab at putting rockbox on it.

I used to have a 1st gen ipod nano, and when I had it I played around with both rockbox and ipodlinux. Rockbox was significantly better because while it took a little getting used to the awkward controls, it felt more responsive, booted faster and overall just felt better to use.

That player died, and I'm still looking for a custom firmware for its replacement(A creative zen, one of the newer ones with no clear model number) since the default one is absolute rubbish.

What does your Zen look like? I know a lot about the various non iPods. As for the alternative firmware, I have the stock firmware. There is no alternative firmware out for my Samsung YP-P2.

Main reason I got it was because it was cheap. The default firmware isnt bad as much as it is buggy, to the point that I almost dont even want to use it at times. For example, the screen will randomly go solid white and the only way out of it is to get a song to play, lock it, wait for the screen to turn off and unlock it. Turning it off and back on does nothing, you have to do that. It may not sound like much, but when you have to do it every few minutes, it gets annoying quite fast.

Back on topic, the best things about custom firmware was the doom ports and gameboy emulators. I remember several times when people would look over my shoulder to see what I was listening to, only to get this funny look when they see an FPS :P .
