And look out Microsoft. You are gonna be hurting soon if you are not already.

We are Microsoft. We will add your likeliness to our own. Resistance is futile.

Don't get cocky, now. I don't think Google Chrome OS will hurt Microsoft's share in the OS market at all. Maybe a few "computer enthusiasts" will be using it, but I don't even think 1 percent of the world will be browsing the internet on Google's dumbed down Linux OS.

Not that I even use Google's browser like every other "computer enthusiast" just because it's hip.

I've never used it.

Was just thinking about trying though.

However, I think its going to do things to the netbook market that MS wont like.

And the trend is towards smaller computers. And simplified operating systems. Both Apple and MS have pushed that trait. Now a competitor is going to do it even more simply than they do.

Had they spend all those years promoting deeper understanding in computers, they - especially MS - would be hardened against competition.

I think google's idea of offloading all your data into the cloud is a little extreme personally. It may work for some specialty devices perhaps though..

It seems google is pushing their agenda as hard as they can to index all the world's information.

I think Google OS will do well for a specific niche in portable devices. I cannot see if making any headway against other OSes in netbooks to be honest, though it may have potential for UMPCs, tablet PCs and mobile devices.

+1

Cloud computing has never really caught on because a vast number of computer users do not have wireless or broadband access. Likewise, those that do who are mobile will find such devices expensive paperweights when they are someplace with inadequate service.

Maybe someday it would be workable, but right now, the only benefit of it is that you can have a vastly underpowered device that utilizes state of the art applications via the Internet.

That, and there would always be an issue with security. Nothing on the Internet is really secure, so if you want your files safe from prying eyes, you don't want them stored on someone's server.

This was generally Sun Microsystems idea with the Sun Ray/UltraSparc concept from about 10 years ago.

It's likely to have a larger user base than Ubuntu as it will more than likely be advertised through all sorts of mediums. I'll try it as it would be free

Well deep penetration takes a while, it might be said that google can trade one type of deep penetration for another. Chrome OS could quickly grow to rival OSX.

Do you really think they are going to stop at netbooks? Doubtful!

Recently orwell said that OSX has a popup suggesting that you do not need to set your browser to googles home page. Like Microsoft, Apple seems to be fighting googles pervasiveness.

QFT. I'm way too paranoid to use it. :p I might install it on a virtual machine to play with though.

I think ChromeOS is a good idea. There are a bunch of things you can do just through a web browser these days.

It will definitely appeal to some, but not me. I use a lot of desktop applications and I don't like the idea of storing my data on Google's cloud.
