Since a few days my computer has become really slow. I think it coulb be a virus. My antivirus had expired three months ago, And I don't have enough money now to renew it. So is there any free antivirus available online that could hopefully get rid of this nasty virus?

Avast! Home Edition is completely free as well. You just have to get a key number for it every year, but unlike AVG Free Anti-Virus, it detects rootkits.

And use the Web Of Trust browser extension to help keep you from accessing bad webpages (it gives websites color-coded ratings based on their trustworthiness - Green means good and red means bad). It is available for IE and Firefox. Prevention is the key.

Avast is a resource-hog and notorious for "false-positives" (identifying things as viruses that aren't really viruses). AVG and Avira are slightly better, but the free versions are ad-ware. I really can't recommend any of the free virus scanners that are available.

Instead, I suggest downloading "combo-fix" (link below), which will run once and purge any viruses, trojans, rootkits, herpes, whatever you've got in there. After that, buy a real virus scanner. I especially recommend NOD32, but most of the retail virus scanners are pretty good. (Except Norton's. Norton's is garbage.)

No. Always uninstall your virus scanner before installing a new one. Having two virus scanners will cause conflicts, slowdown, and other problems.

Ad-aware isn't really a virus scanner, so it should be safe to run Ad-aware and AVG together, but not AVG and Avast.

I am a satisfied user of AVG free, I have never had any adware issues with it and I have used it for several years with excellent results.

I have used both the AVG free and the AVG professional and see excellent results with both.

Some versions of AVG Free have been known to create unwanted pop-ups asking the user to upgrade or buy the professional edition, and at one point forcing users to wait 30 seconds after an update while an ad displayed or the update would not install. I personally feel this behavior fits the definition of ad-ware, but if it doesn't bother you, AVG definitely does the job as a virus scanner.

I agree, scubasteve, if my AVG free did that I would be very irritated and would not use the product. I have not found that to be the case, though, and am quite satisfied. I would consider the suggestion I have for you to check if you have actually downloaded it from the AVG site rather than the other sites that piggyback their ad ware on the free download. When searching in Google I see several sites that advertise the free download, but are not on the actual AVG site.

I like Panda Cloud Antivirus- free, resource-light, and effective.

I had downloaded it from free.avg.com, but it's been several months since I've last used it. They may have done away with the issues I mentioned since then. It may be worth trying for the OP.

I'm using Avast in preference to AVG as it gets along better with Vista 64 and is generally more capable. I've had no false positives or any trouble with either, and I've got Avast!'s real-time checking turned up to high.
