Scientists have found shells that they believe were used as make up pots by Neandertals.

That's pretty cool. And I hear the Neanderthal genome is supposed to be published this year. :)

where is the actual evidence they were used as face paint?

A far as I tell there are shells with traces of pigment on them. Talk of modern concept such as "foundation" make no sense.

secondly why does face paint have to be symbolic? that is one of many possible reason for doing it.

I agree with 0_equals_true that there might have been other reasons for the 'make-up'.

Here's a somewhat related article about the eye make-up used by ancient Egyptians:
bbc news/health - Cleopatra's eye make-up 'had health benefits'

Other uses seems plausible and fairly likely. They probably painted other things before themselves.

Were there not bones discovered years ago with ocre on them? The suggestion was that they painted their dead? Flowers were scattered on them too.

No its the pig tails that make it sexy.

I have seen that photo a hundred times over the years and it still horrifies me. Do you think that modern medicine could help poor computerlove?

So they found Neanderthals in Africa too? Interesting.

btw, anyone knows why they are so sure those are body paints? It seems like they could be used to paint anything.
