I had never heard of this format until today, but is anyone familiar with Movie CD? I heard that the codecs don't work properly, from some sources, and that they in fact can cause problems with the running of regular video codecs on one's computer. On the other hand, I've read that a simple patch can fix this, but I am unsure of that.

Anyone have any experience with it?

Thank you!

You may be thinking of the format known
as "Video CD" it is slightly outdated but
I think it is still a favourite of technology
nostalgics. I have some, but I have replaced
them with the dvd format, but I keep mine
for nostalgia.

I think players that play dvds also will still
play the video cd format, as well as some
3rd party free software computer plaers
such as VLC video lan software.

I remember these. Not sure where my friend bought them though. The DVD won because the disc capacity was larger and you didn't need to swap discs half way through, thus allowing faster data streaming for clearer pictures displayed at their respective resolution to be played on a TV

I ended up deciding against them. Movie CDs are different than VCDs though, as I’ve found. VCD you can usually still make with a burner anyways, I believe. I’ve read about too many problems involving Movie CD, though it really did seem to be a novel concept that I wish would have worked with a modern system.

VCD is popular in Southeast Asia because the Discs are more resistant to humidity than Videotapes are. Also the Media and the players are cheaper than videotape. VCD is also cheaper than DVD. Here is a Wikipedia link to VCD: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VCD
